Parra-lytic: Tim Smith busted again

18:22 AEST Thu Dec 13 2007

http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=333870

Parramatta halfback Tim Smith has been busted drinking less than a week after agreeing to abstain from alcohol and faces the sack from his NRL club.
Smith was fined $1,000 and issued a 12-month alcohol ban by the club last Friday for allegedly intimidating, swearing and making obscene finger gestures at a member of the public while intoxicated.
But the club is investigating new claims he was out drinking and club chief executive Denis Fitzgerald confirmed he will meet with the troubled player to discuss the situation.
"We will be having a meeting with Tim some time tomorrow," said Fitzgerald.
"We have a report that he has been drinking."
Sydney's Daily Telegraph is reporting that Smith had to be picked up from the Tollgate Hotel at North Parramatta however the licensee told wwos.com.au that Smith was not at the pub.
"We close up at 4.30am and open up at 10am," said Tolgate owner 'Robbie.'
"I was back here at 6am and he definitely wasn't here... He was not drinking here that's for sure."

The club should make sure that he is in fact guilty before culling him but he should be cut

while I would've liked to still have Green at the club Kris Keating and in a couple of years Hodkinson and Hunt are more then able replacements.

Maybe the club can get a Jamie Lyon release and cut him but not allow him to sign for another club until his contract runs out maybe 18 months of labouring earning $15 working 10 hours a day might kick some sense into Tim.

Even if he only had 1 drink and didn't abuse anyone thats not the point it's the fact he drank not what he did after drinking that is the issue this time.

This has to be a given. If we are to cut him free, we cant let him sign with another club. From the sounds of it he already thinks he is invincible, he has to be reminded how hard it is out there.

And the Tolly being one of the favourite watering holes of the boys.. Hmm... Maybe we should be puttin sanctions on the local establishments as well. Fine them if they serve players that have issues.

while i am not defending Tim here, the club has to shoulder a fair part of the blame here too.

surely his problems were recognised much earlier than after last weeks efforts. he needs guidance and support and it would appear that the club hasn't provided this. mentoring programs could easily be put in place and monitored - I mean the guys are basically seeing each other on a daily basis now with the 'professional' age.

other services to help him with his alcohol issues should have been accessed for him.

in saying this i realise that he is 22 and could do things for himself but i think it is evident that most players are now reliant on others to do things for them. i mean they have managers to buy them cars, invest money, etc.

clubs now a days bring players to them from such a young age that they are now the surrogate family. the club has a duty of care. in the case of Tim Smith i feel they have been negligent.

Why should that happen? Pubs are already fined if caught serving anyone who has had too many. They have nothing to gain by doing the job that the club should be doing themselves.

But then again, ppl with gambling problems try and sue clubs/casino's for lettin them play even tho they may have banned em from said establishments.. You just never know these days.

If true it is very disappointing :(

Even worse, we will have Finch at half for the year, seriously i would rather a drunk Tim Smith on the field than a fully fit and focused Brett Finch.......

I would put Hodko before Finch tbh

Im sick of defending Tim. Its a shame cause he had so much potential but you know some other club will pick him up and guide him to a premiership knowing our luck.

I'm not sure many of us are close enough to the club to know whats happened and make that call.

I'd actually point a big finger at his management....

I do not believe that the decision has already been made. I can also tell you for a fact, that Ovo does want to help the kid. He is well known for his commitement to young people, and this is a young person in need of help. Surely we dont abandon one of our own now. Did he do a dumb and irresponsible thing - absolutely yes. Is he a bad person, or breaking the law, absolutely not.

And then I see this quote....

I know which path I would follow.

The kid needs some help.
I don't know whether he has an alchohol problem or not. It hasn't really been proven that he does. Maybe he is just your stereo/typical full blooded testosterone filled young male that goes a bit silly when he gets on the drink.
Then again, maybe he's an alcho.

The worst thing we could do to him atm is to give him the big boot up the arse.

Support and counselling, maybe a big fine and suspension as well.
But I reckon we could get him back on track.
Mostly for his sake.

I'm inclined to show him the door.

But one thing not many of us know is just how far we have extended a helping hand.
