They already have an opportunity to be represented on the International stage, it is called the Australian and New Zealand national teams.

So you would like to deny them an opportunity to represent their culture.

Sounds familiar

lol, 'plastic maoris', would like to see you say that to McLeans or Holmes' face. And Holmes, Ponga and McLean, born in Townsville, Port Hedland and Sydney respectively are traitors how?

Call me crazy, but I'm a Kiwi who thinks Maoris should play for NZ in the sport of RL. It would be really good for the growth of international RL if we could get all of our indigenous players.

Guys like Ponga who talk about dreaming about playing for the All Blacks but doesn't want to pull on a Kiwis jersey are massive jerks to me.

And spare me the cliche'd "you wouldn't say it to their face" line. I'd do a haka in their face bro..something they'll probably have to learn from scratch if they put their hand up for this rōpū.

Well, this thread has been a doozy. I haven't been here long but I expect all the posters complaining this match complained each year about the indigenous match?

I don't think this is comparable to the world cup, this is a preseason exhibition match - the Maori team shouldn't have been in a WC because nations contest that.

This is a Maori ethnic team, not a NZ team, so all Maori, whether you consider them traitors or not (and only really Tamou is from that lot) should be eligible.

Also, I thought Thurston's dad was pakeha?

TBH I wasn't comparing this side to 2000, I just wanted to mention that as a random fact people may have forgot.

I just don't see the concept working. Are these elite aussie maoris really going to risk injury to rep us? We'll probably get some sub-standard side and the aborigine outside backs will tear us up.

And pretty sure Thurston's dad is both. Arthur Beetson was quoted as saying he knew JT would get bigger and fill out because his Dad was maori.

I am not talking about just the players getting the opportunity to represent their cultural, community and people. This game also puts the aboriginal culture, and now also the Maori culture, on the National and international stage. This will be all over the news and sports programs, it will be a major story. But hey lets can it because it hurts your feelings, lets not provide some of our most disadvantaged groups with a platform for cultural awareness just to appease your sensibilities.

I don't see it as any different than the previous all stars incarnations - the NRL will push it, so players will want to play in it. For a guy like Ponga, I reckon he'd love to play in it, more than an NRL XIII or World XII. I think you're underestimating how much players will want to play in this match.

Hmm, re Thurston, I thought I remembered an interview he gave on Maori TV where he said his Dad wasn't Maori - but I could have been dreaming that one.

I think anyone of NZ heritage should play for NZ given the good that will do for League.

But, Ponga probably isn't a great example of what your issue is. He is Australian born and lived the vast majority of his life there.

The new Origin rules have and will help this.

I really hope it's just speculation that JT and that fat wanker from Brisbane want to play in this game next year.

You've retired, give someone else a chance, if you want some limelight enter The Voice.

JT has publicly said he won't be taking part.

I'm not sure why you're angry at him for that

There is no alignment between developing states

WA NT QLD should be aligned at SOO level and NSW SA VIC TAS should also be aligned

Otherwise you have a valid reason to include Victoria with its Melbourne squad

I think this all star game should only occur every 4 years to make it special

You can fill the gap with the Commonwealth or World 9s once every 4 years

2 years of 9s NRL carnival

I remember Jeff Kennett saying that Victoria should be in State of Origin using the Melbourne Storm as their squad.

No

They represent their culture as a larger part of the AUS/NZ culture via the national sides like everyone else. Do the NZ team not perform a Maori war dance before every match by way of example.

There you go again, stating Maori aren't a nation. They are as much a nation as the cook Islands, England, Wales and Scotland. All "nations" "inside" a larger nation.

You're on an odd track here. Nationality and culture aren't the same. Furthermore culture isn't zero sum.

Kayln Ponga is both Maori and a Queenslander/Australian, however, representing Australia doesn't mean he's representing Maori culture.

Why are you so against these minority groups having an opportunity to celebrate and showcase their culture? What are you so scared of?

This post makes no sense, especially the last sentence.
