Origin 2013 NSW side

He's already better than Pearce. We don't need his creativity. Assuming we're smart enough to pick Hayne at fullback, we have plenty in the other 3 spine positions. What we need is someone with a decent kicking game, which Reynolds definitely has. He also appears to have a very calm head on young shoulders. We'll see how he goes at the start fo the season, but for mine Pearce has been tried and failed, and I cna't see any other realistic option. Maybe Sam Williams... although that's really only based on half a dozen games at the end of last season.

Yeh lets pick a halfback in Origin who has no ball playing ability. Genius.

I'm all for replacing Pearce if there's a viable option but a one dimensional halfback, no thanks.

Players who had more linebreak Assists than Adam Reynolds in 2012;

Sam Thaiday
Ryan Simpkins
Lote Tuiquri
Matt Prior
Michael Crocker
Aaron Woods
Cameron Ciraldo
Elijah Taylor
Fui Fui Moi Moi
Jesse Bromwich
Zeb Taia
Luke Douglas
Jack De Belin
Eddy Pettybourne
Chris Heighington
Anthony Watmough
etc.
etc.

Exposing outside backs at club level is one thing, doing it at origin against Slater, Folau & Boyd is a whole new level. Being one dimensional just doesn't cut it at the highest level of the game.

These are the only positions I can make my mind up on, if, and that's if, these players carry their form into the 2013 season.

I put Soward/Carney in brackets, because I believe it has to be either one of those in the 6. Which it will be is anyones guess.

Soward will be nowhere near the team and farah on the bench??? He was our best player this year and needs to be on the field for the entire game.

Those are both valid points.

If Farah is in form they should select him (starting). However if he is not, they should look toward the future of the spine and begin blooding Rein.

I'd rather have Hayne at fullback and ditch Brett Stewart but if Stewart does hold his spot it would be at the expense of Uate - there are just too many mistakes in his game and Hayne is definitely not a centre.

I'd expect Josh Reynolds to start over Maloney. Maloney is a freak but his defence is dodgy. Reynolds plays a really in your face style of game and tackles his arse off - that is suited to Origin.

Gallen won't move into the front row. We don't need him there any more. The Blues have heaps of good props now. Tamou, Woods, Merrin and Grant will be locks.

The backrow will be Gallen, Bird and Williams (he will bounce back playing with Des). They'll choose one more out of Watmough, Stewart, Creagh or Lewis. Probably Lewis if he is fit.

The utility position has been a problem for a while. Don't be surprised to see Gidley come back into the frame. If Josh Reynolds wasn't selected at five eight, he could be a good choice as well (ex hooker, current half and Lewis could cover an injury in the outside backs).

Josh Reynolds missed the third most tackles of any half in the comp this year, favouring him over someone based on defence is a little optimistic.

I also think Gallen stays in the front row until one or two of the youngsters really establish themselves. For all the promise they've shown I wouldn't say any of them are proven at Origin level. Tamou included.

I don't like the idea of J. Reynolds as well, he is overrated.

I agree, I definitely preferred it when Gallen played front row compared to lock for us in the third game, didn't like his 'attempted' ball playing at all

I'm going to call it. With Sticky running the show at Paramatta, Hayne will be playing five-eighth. And you know what, I think he'll finally settle in and do a good job of it too. That's my prediction for season 2013.

That's a pretty interesting and solid side actually. Could see sticky going that way and also could see it working.

Lol @ wolfman. Inglis would be licking his chops, his favourite speed bump.

Yeah but it was two lines separated by a gap, which signified a change in topic. In the first line I was praising the list I quoted, in the second line I was mocking the guy that picked wolfman.

Do you really want to get into this? I admit I should have been more clear, no more to say.

Pretty shocked at the amount of people still picking Hayne on the wing. I begin to wonder if any of the people picking him there actually watch him when he doesn't have the ball in his hands. Everyone is fond of rubbishing Steve Turner because of what Inglis did to him (and rightly so) but Hayne has been infinitely more costly in the games he's played there since 2009. He is out of position all night. Even the Boyd try in the first half of Game 3 should never have happened but did because of Hayne's Eric Grothe-like positioning.

Maroon Faithful yet coaching them how to fix their problems?

By all means criticise but don't tell them how to fix it. :(

Hayne has a lot of positioning problems but on a very basic level his obvious issue is that he lets his man get on the outside too often. The sideline is the best defender in the game but instead of utilising that, Hayne bunches up too far infield or rushes in off his wing (hence the Eric Grothe reference I believe).

He didn't get badly exposed until Game 3 this year but the signs were there in Game 1 and 2. On the left he rushed in on a number of occasions to put a big shot on Hodges. A few of them were good decisions but on a few others he was very lucky that Hodges didn't get a quick tap on pass to Tate. It is always a matter of time before he gets exposed when he plays on the wing.

Hayne has to be in the NSW team but it should be at fullback or in the centres (if Stewart is deemed undroppable).

Also surprised at the lack of Tom Learoyd-Lahrs in this discussion. He falls behind many other props at club level (and even in overall ability) but he is one of the few NSW props in the last 4-5 years to actually have a real impact. His charges in 2009-2010 for NSW and Australia were great and sent more than a few QLD defenders reeling.

He's an unfortunate victim of Stuart's focus on short-term club form rather than loyalty to well-performing players.
