Origin 2013 NSW side

Hayne is no longer a winger. Hopefully Michael Gordon can have a great start to 2013 he would be a better wing candidate plus a dead eye goalkicker. Hayne as Maroon said in the centres or fullback or at worst off the bench but not on the wing but I have been saying this for years.

Hayne should be the fullback with Morris and Uate on the wings. But the selectors seem to like Stewart. He's good, great defender, solid under the highball. He has nice touches but I think his work load is too low for Origin.

I will admit, 2013 will be a very interesting Origin series. I won't go ahead and pick a 2013 NSW team but there is a few from last year who deserve to retain their jerseys and some will be shown the door. Hopefully, Dalley can shut his mouth to the media and focus on the important things, the football. As always, I will back my team and back them to win but we will fight for every inch, every point to win it. This QLD team is a one of a kind.

Hayne has a lot of positioning problems but on a very basic level his obvious issue is that he lets his man get on the outside too often. The sideline is the best defender in the game but instead of utilising that, Hayne bunches up too far infield or rushes in off his wing (hence the Eric Grothe reference I believe).

He didn't get badly exposed until Game 3 this year but the signs were there in Game 1 and 2. On the left he rushed in on a number of occasions to put a big shot on Hodges. A few of them were good decisions but on a few others he was very lucky that Hodges didn't get a quick tap on pass to Tate. It is always a matter of time before he gets exposed when he plays on the wing.

Hayne has to be in the NSW team but it should be at fullback or in the centres (if Stewart is deemed undroppable).
Where do you want him, Senor?

Where do you want him, Senor?

Totally undecided to be honest. The toss up for me is either moving Hayne to fullback or leaving Stewart there and shifting Hayne to left centre and I've flip-flopped from one to the other for quite a while now.

Stewart played quite well for NSW and it would be a risky move to drop him and replace him with Hayne. Hayne is a much better fullback IMO and what he would bring to NSW as a fullback would be terrific. However, I'm not fond of the idea of dropping a quality player for an unproven (albeit better) player in the hope that everything turns out well.

I've always been opposed to Hayne playing in the centres but in this situation it might be a better solution. I think his defensive shortcomings would be less severe in the centres and since he is likely to line up against Hodges the chances of him getting mauled are low. His attack is obviously good and I think he'd have a positive impact. He did not badly in his one game there in 2011 and he wouldn't be any worse than Jennings or Morris.

I think it really comes down to whether you are a risk-loving or risk-averse person. Hayne to fullback offers more but it is less certain. The third option is sitting on the fence because you don't like making decisions like me.

I assume you'd have him at fullback or not at all?

No, actually. I am resolved that he ought to play left centre. Like you, I don't think it's either a good idea nor a fair proposition for Stewart to be dropped after playing as he has. The constant refrain about Hayne needing to be there to improve NSW's admittedly ordinary play-making options, is contradicted by the fact that although Stewart is no ball player, he's actually created or converted more opportunities into points from fullback than what Hayne has. He has the runs on the board. Plus I think he's much more reliable than Hayne. It is, as you stated, a much bigger risk to throw Hayne back in there and just hope that by some good fortune he finally translates his club form to rep level.

Mind you, I did notice you contended the same thing as Prince EWS, over on Rleague, that Hayne must be there. I don't necessarily agree. For example if it's a choice between him playing wing or not being in the team at all, I wouldn't hesitate to leave him out altogether. I'd rather the bloke play middle-third in defence than on the wing again. That's how bad and liable I think he is to yet another failure there.

As you said though, in his one game at centre, he wasn't exposed and I think it's worth trying him there again. Especially if QLD makes the same mistake and picks Hodges again. That would be one of the few match-ups where I think NSW has a genuine chance at consistently breaching our line.

That is a big reason why I have felt for a while Hayne is a centre at origin level. The other point is that Haynes running game is superior to his passing game and at origin he needs to play a position that puts more responsibility on his running than passing game. At fullback he is more of a playmaker which is bad for NSW because we lose our best runner of the ball every time he passes and we already have guys like Carney who do that job. If you partner him up with Brett Morris I think that is a combination that could really exploit the right side defense of QLD much like how Inglis and Boyd have done.

I would not be dumping either Jennings or Morris given how well both played last series. Jennings was dangerous nearly every time he ran the ball and Morris neutralized Inglis better than anyone has in the last 7 years.

Hayne needs to be on the wing or FB barring injury.

When I say he must be there I am thinking of him at fullback or in the centres. If I was presented with a "what if" scenario of playing Hayne on the wing or not at all then I'd probably drop him. However, what I really mean is that if given the choice between Hayne at fullback or not at all I'd drop Stewart.

I know the NSWRL selectors will probably consider him on the wing or in the halves at some point but that is because they are idiots.

I don't think that is the reason behind anybody suggesting Hayne moving into the centres. Hayne's best position is obviously fullback, the only reason a move into the centres is being considered is because it is better for the team overall to keep two good players in Stewart and Hayne.

It isn't that Hayne in the centres would be better than Hayne at fullback, it is that Hayne in the centres with Stewart at fullback would be more balanced.

Hayne's running game is a strength of his but he also has the best passing game of any fullback around. Both components of his game complement each other and make them stronger than they would be in isolation. I think the strongest argument for Hayne to fullback is that he will actually do a lot of passing and act as a primary playmaker for NSW. If you just want Hayne at fullback for his running game then you would be better off going with Stewart or Dugan, both of good ball runners and much safer and more reliable.

By neutralising Inglis you mean those occasions that he rushed in on Inglis despite the fact that he should have continued sliding to stay with the overlap?

Josh Morris was more to blame for both of Boyd's tries in Game 1 than Uate was, despite the fact that Uate has got more stick for it. Morris bundled Inglis over the sideline once and that was really all. Other than that he defended like he normally did; poor reads in defence combined with a weak tackling technique.

Selective memory mate

The man inside Morris, Carney, was the one responsible for rushing up and left Morris covering 2 men. Happened on both occasions in game 1. Morris manhandled Inglis on nearly every occasion they came together throughout the last series. Yes when he bundled him into touch was the most memorable but it wasn't an isolated incident.

Considering everyone is talking about putting Hayne at left center it's pretty pointless talking about NSW right center anyway. Dumping Jennings or moving him to the right would be just a stupid

Haynes playmaking is not as important as his running game playmaking should be left to Farah, Carney etc Hayne overplays his hand too much this is why Stewart and Dugan are ahead as options at fb.

Not selective at all. I've had this debate on a number of occasions:

Queensland run a play down the short(er) side. Queensland only have a slight advantage withHarrison acting as a link man to Cronk, Inglis and Boyd with Slater out the back. Glenn Stewart and Carney are sliding across from the ruck with Jorris and Uate outside them.

Ball moves to Cronk and you can clearly see that it is Morris and Uate who are moving up and in while Carney is sliding across. Morris is the one rushing up here, not Carney.

http://imageshack.us/f/716/boyd1morris2.jpg/

By this point it is too late. Morris has moved too far up and is only focussed on Inglis rather than sliding with the play. He needs to leave the threat of the man coming back in to his inside men and go with the threat of Slater out the back.

http://imageshack.us/f/33/boyd1morris3.jpg/

Admittedly it is a well executed play by QLD and clever to use Inglis as a decoy but Morris has rushed up and in despite the fact that it was a short side play where NSW actually had enough numbers to address the play.

Queensland may have scored anyway but Morris and Uate moving up guaranteed that they would.

The same is true with the second try by Boyd. Queensland spread the ball wide and Morris jams up too far rather than sliding with the threat.

http://imageshack.us/f/525/boyd2morris1.jpg/

Morris begins sliding but holds up when he sees Inglis coming back on the inside. Inglis really should be the responsibility of Carney and Stewart on the inside. Morris should be moving across with the threat of Thurston and Harrison.

Morris jams up against his inside man.

http://imageshack.us/f/252/boyd2morris4.jpg/

Morris takes Inglis but the ball goes out to Boyd.

Again the use of Inglis as a decoy is clever but Morris makes things worse by focussing on Inglis. On both occasions NSW had a good chance to shut down the play by sliding across. However, it is evident that there was little communication between Morris and his inside men (which is poor by both parties).

Morris manhandled Inglis on nearly every occasion they came together throughout the last series. Yes when he bundled him into touch was the most memorable but it wasn't an isolated incident.

Absolutely not. Give me some other occasions when Morris "manhandled" Inglis.

I only remember one other notable occasion where they were up against each other in a meaningful encounter. Early in Game 2 Inglis nearly jinked around Morris and Morris ended up making a half-hearted tackle from the side, which resembled more of a hug around the stomach.

Morris didn't do as badly in defence as I thought he would but he was still pretty rubbish. He showed that he still hasn't improved his tackling technique or improved his reading of the play. One piece of nice cover defence does not constitute good overall defensive play.

Considering everyone is talking about putting Hayne at left center it's pretty pointless talking about NSW right center anyway. Dumping Jennings or moving him to the right would be just a stupid

Why is Hayne's playmaking less important than his running game?

A passing game complements a players running game so at very least putting him in position where he is a passing threat would make his running more dangerous. At fullback people would be looking for Hayne to pass more often and it would force defenders to hold off him more. Hayne's passing game has been a big part of him becoming a more dangerous player over the last few years. He is a far more complete package now rather just an excellent broken play runner like he used to be back 3-4 years ago.

Besides, leaving the playmaking to Farah and Carney hasn't been very successful so far. Unless Carney steps up NSW is going to lack execution in attack like they did last year. For large portions of last series NSW only looked threatening off kicks and otherwise relied on individual acts of brilliance.

Farah and Carney were quite good last year NSW were the better team for the most part. A passing game does help a running game but if it is used selectively like Slater, Stewart Barba etc not the heap it all on him gameplan Parra have used which fails miserably.
