My unfounded belief is that Gus was worried about Nathan being in the system and how Ivan would handle him.

Chris Anderson, Walters and other coaches have promoted their kids to first grade when they're not upto it.

Ivan has publicly said he would not have known what to do with Nathan (on a YouTube podcast I believe) if he was coach.

At the end of the day we are back to back premiers and my belief is that if you are satisfied with the current standing of things in your life and there is no extreme trauma in the your past then you shouldn't think about alternate histories.

Any minor change and so many outcomes could be different.

I remember hearing a interview, Ivan stated he wouldn't have debuted Nathan at 18.

I’ve been over the whole bunker involvement for a long time now, but I really think we just need to not award tries anymore.

If there is a an incident that may constitute a try forget about the referee making a decision, it is totally pointless, just let the bunker rule on all tries.

The whole emotion, spontaneity around the enjoyment of scoring a try is gone, we have rubbed that out if the game entirely.

Watch endless replays at the slowest of slowmos and then find a reason to disallow a try.

I think years ago the bunker was introduced to try and eliminate the howlers, we are far removed from that now and the game is much the worse for it. Super slow motion, watch endless replays and find a rule or replay to rule a try out. I’m over it frankly. It’s just ruining the game.
You are right we don't want a game like NFL. How many times does the bunker take 2/3 minutes to make a decision then the attacking team plays the ball. The opposition might have been out on their feet. IF the attacking player knows its no try tell the referee then play can commence immediately.

Every player wants to jag a try, harder to do it with all the cameras, but sometimes the players don't know if they'd scored it sometimes

The bunker and video can't be removed.

The reason the bunker confirmation came in is because in 2020 a Souths player put his foot on the sideline against the Bulldogs and the ref awarded a try.

It's here to stay and needs to be. There is no such thing as the obvious howler.

We have the 1000 FPS at 4k tech. If you want broadcast images then you'll have a video ref if some form

Read up on the NFL and use of video referral to see what happens once it is removed.

I'd like to know which part of this isn't true
He did ok at Brisbane, with 3 finals appearances and a prelim and got us to the finals every year he coached here. He's clearly flawed as a coach and wasn't the guy to take us (or the Dragons) to where we got to but the words fail/failure need to be reserved for chumps like Mary or Elliott or they lose all meaning.

2011 Brisbane was a gun side.

Had a still firing Darren Lockyer. Got fired in 2012 without Lockyer.

Hard to know about 2016 to 2018 with us. The junior systems were in place and the awesome U20 side was coming into first grade.

To be fair to Hook he did give some if those players their debuts.

How anyone can say Hooks time with us wasnt a success legit blows my mind, regardless of how it ended.

We finally had some sustained success for consecutive seasons which was an absolute rarity up until that point.
Yeah being down 14- zip every week then Moylan, Carty and Peach playing off the cuff hot potato was a great gameplan

You don't get anywhere near first grade if you don't know how to coach and you certainly don't win over 50% of games over a period of 14 odd years, His trouble was that wherever he went he got offside with too many people.

I was grateful for the consistent finals placings under Hook because we had been a club that missed the finals most years. However we relied too much on individual brilliance and fitness to win games.

Under Ivan 2.0 we win, less so on individual brilliance than on consistency of maintaining excellent structures and the best defence in the comp.

Agree 100%. Lots of greats wins in his almost three seasons, some pretty exciting footy, regardless of whether the game plans were perfect.

I can't remember exactly which year it was - I think it was 2018 - and about half way through the season we were top of the table along with St George. We played them at home and absolutely clobbered them with our defence. We had been very good defensively that year until a little later in the season where we just seemed to fall away.

But it was the 1st time I had noted that the Panthers were winning games with defense. Previously our mentality had been to just score more than the opposition - a throw back to the 2003-2004 Black Magic era.

I definitely believe that Hook contributed significantly to laying those defensive (and fitness) foundations. He however could not coach Red Zone attack to save his life and 2019 Ivan also struggled to get the Panthers firing in the Red Zone.

That was when they were enforcing the rules properly then the media complained and as soon as they stopped the ladder changed.

I am a little older than you and I can assure you that most years they start enforcing a rule and within 2 - 3 weeks, it's forgotten again - been happening for 45 years that I know of. You didn't expect any consistency did you? :)
