f**k the excuses. The game hasn't changed that much. Any player or coach who blames the rules are the first ones I ship out of my club.

What is being exposed are those teams that want to work, and those that don't.

Lazy edge defence at the poorly performing clubs in particular are being exposed because they're not putting pressure on the opposition attack. If you jog up or just tread water on the same spot waiting for them to come to you, then you will get what you deserve.

Some of these clubs need to raise the intensity at their training. Retreat back the 10 and accelerate back up over and over again. It's attitude, it's habit, and too many teams have bad habits.

These new rules were supposed to counter Melbourne Storm tactics. Well look what's happened? They're even more dominant! Why? Because if you play for Melbourne Storm, you f**king turn up on every single play, not just when it suits.

Attacking teams want space. Defensive lines are 10m back. How do you take away space? You close it down as quick as you can. That's what Munster & Hughes do at Melbourne. That's what Luai and Cleary do at Penrith. They work just hard in defence as they do in attack. Their coaches demand it from every player on every play. These clubs have the mantra of never giving up on the play.
Well said big hit. You are correct with what you say.

Cheers DD, appreciate the post mate.

I moved from Sydney (home for all my life) to Adelaide in late 2019. While I love it here, the only things I really miss are seeing all my mates - and going to/talking footy. Although i've got Kayo and can watch any games if I want - which is great. And I'd regularly watch a number of the Fox NRL shows too.

I've got many new friends over here - of whom a lot actually follow NRL! (i'm not kidding, you'd be surprised at how many folk here are interested in league. But that's for another thread - "The Case for Adelaide" in the expansion forums if you have some spare time..) But the only real outlet to banter about footy is here with my "virtual" friends on LU. I personally don't know anyone here but it's been a great place to banter etc about a sport I truly love. I thought when I moved here I'd only be a flight away every few months from catching up with my mates and going to some games - but Covid and resulting border restrictions have killed that...

So when I moved here, I've naturally found myself on LU a lot more to connect with Rugby League. But that has also coincided with the Covid Season of last year, and IMO the rank disappointment of everything about this season - not just my team, but the quality of the game as a whole. So rather than get angry, annoyed, disillusioned etc etc each week - I just had to switch it all off. The games, NRL shows, the lot.

I do genuinely love the sport, and my Dragons. I really want them both to get back on their feet and win me over again at some stage... But I fear that with "Donald" Vlandys at the wheel - ego will continue to get in the way of taking ownership of the mess he's created. The negative state of the game is not all due to him - but it's on his watch.

But for now I'll happily keep in touch on the forums like this, and see how things pan out.

Good luck to you, and to the Dragons for the rest of the year - I hope they manage to put a smile on your face.

And to the Storm n Panthers fans - good luck to you guys n girls too. You've got amazing football sides. If you do get the GF as people expect - that is actually a game I'd look forward to watching.
I could be joining you in not watching anymore NRL games this year, now that we have the 12 Dragons players breaking protocols of biosecurity measures. I'm thinking that we will have mainly reserve grade players lining up for us for the last 8 rounds and will most probably be losing all games. It is now a complete disaster. Sorry for being negative.

There is no grind in the games.

Hardly any 'big' tackles anymore.

Alot of very soft tries scored. It's not entertaining seeing ppl stroll over at first receiver without decoys or cut out passed.

Too many arms tackles because there is too much scrunity on defence (high shots, 6 against). Defence lines are very passive.

Even the best defensive sides (Panthers, Storm etc) they're not great defensive sides as compared to years gone past.

The game is soft, unwatchable and lame.

Bellamy is an elite coach and rebuilt after the 2016 gf failure to be more attacking focused

The 2020 interpretation played into the team he already built

This is really good for Bellamy's legacy but not exactly exciting for me

So if Bellamy can adapt then others can too. Some rules will get wound back but alot will stay. So either adapt or get left behind

I feel this is a little unfair of a comparison. Bellamy just adjusted his team to be more attacking focused under the same "metagame". His team was already good.

The changes in 2020 completely changed the way rugby league is played. This will always create a large gap between those that can play the style and those who can't before those teams can rebuild. Also trust me for small market sides like Canberra, North qld and Newcastle rebuilding ain't no easy thing.

Two questions

Why would fans of crappy teams turn on the TV when they are playing a top side

Why would a neutral fan turn on the TV to watch three games like we saw on Saturday

Yes, I agree.
Adapt, or get left behind.

Maybe with some notice, consultation and planning, clubs would have had an opportunity to adapt their respective rosters, coaching methods, and training techniques.

Instead, we got snap, mid season rules changes, snap, mid season rule interpretation changes, and dictatorship.

No time to adapt, no time to adjust rosters with multi year contracts.

That's another thing

The nrl wants clubs to be spending their cap. So rebuilding has to take existing contracts into account. Teams end up with dead cap money paying freight to other teams to offload players

Increasing the amount of time it takes to rebuild

Again though. Why did the Storm work it out quickly

I have said before the standard is poor. It has been like that for a few years though.

What rules could the game bring in tomorrow that would make Dogs etc be better?

That is the problem with putting the blow outs down to only the rules. The rules slowly get wound back and you still have the holes in junior development.

Coaching is at an all time low. If I am starting up a side tomorrow and can pick any coach... There is only 4 I would want ( 1 of those isn't my club's coach either)

I am all for looking into the blowouts but need to be done as a overall look at everything including rules
