It’s a good point….

and maybe the lack of “second tier” football last year is an under-rated factor in what we are seeing this year…

With many injuries n suspensions… there are many players in the comp who basically played stuff all last year…possibly under-done this year, under-developed.

That is what I put it down too. Teams are fine at full strength those that have a few injuries or those with major changes ( example new coach) are struggling.

Some side lost by 50 points in AFL. Rugby I posted most sports seem to be having issues with competitive games. I see it as a Covid hangover which sadly will take another year or 2 to fix up.

So any likely rule changes won't have the instant affect

You suck because Rick can't coach and is a shit bloke who the whole squad can't stand
Mate the Raiders find a way to suck no matter what the rules are. I'm not having a shot at your team or suggesting they don't deserve their spot. But the game f**king sucks at the moment. The competition for possession is gone and defence with it.

I wish my team was fine at full strength…. They are worse than last year imo and top 8 frauds. The only thing that has changed is that far more sides have gone backwards further since last year.

I have a $100 bet with @Smug Panther on them to make the 8.

Too many shocking teams in the comp. the sides that do the basics well will do well. Dragons defend so puts them over 11 other teams... should see them scrap in

Is it the rules or a lack of talent?

Newcastle were a train wreck when the rules favoured defence.

I think there isn't enough talent to fill 16 teams because fewer people are playing the game. There needs to be a strong 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier. We might have to go back to the 5 metre rule to create a balance between defence and attack.

Canberra conceded 3 tries to 12 players. That is attitude not the rules

Attitude of players have been the same since the game got professional. I wouldn't say players are less / more motivated within the last ten years.

The rule changes exponentially magnify the result.

As for other sports and covid, pleanty of others that are tracking just the same (cricket, basketball, football).

They snatched victory from the jaws of defeat this weekend. They did the same a couple of weeks back against the Raiders. This is a Hook trademark. I always thought he'd do better than expected. Three more wins may be enough.

While admittedly I haven’t watched an NRL game since Round 13 - I haven’t seen any real improvement in them from last season. Many dragons fans feel different, perhaps just because “it’s not Paul McGregor” coaching them.

The only impressive victory we’ve had was against Parra. The rest of our wins have been against woeful teams at the time (the “4 win streak”) and others like you’ve suggested, bumbled our way across the line. All teams have had injuries n suspension to varying degrees - it’s not unique to us.

Yet to be in the top 8 pretty much all season, with more losses than wins, and when at one stage we’d lost 7 games from 9 matches, and flogged by the last-placed Bulldogs…

Sums up the true mediocrity of this season for mine. And why I’ve turned off NRL this year.

I’ll still look at the scores to keep up to date, banter in here etc. but the game itself is just woeful IMO. I hope it changes.

The realities of our season have been clearly outlined by you BBJF. Since the introduction of the new and newer rules from 2020 to now, the game has changed significantly. I must admit that we are very lucky to still be in the top 8. This could change drastically in the remaining games of the competition in 2021. These last 8 games will test us and 5 of the teams we will play will be doing their darnedest to win to better or maintain their positions in the top 8.

While you are not watching the games it is good that you are still contributing to the forum.

Are they though? Players are always looking for the easy way out. Instead of working hard to get back to FG. When dropped they just seek a release. Don't get me started on the poor coaching in the game

Those sports at the top end will be fine. It is mid tier and lower that are the issues. The olympics and T20 WC will show the weaker teams are very poor

The new rules reward doing the basics well. Hook is good at getting sides doing that it is the technical stuff he lacks

Cheers DD, appreciate the post mate.

I moved from Sydney (home for all my life) to Adelaide in late 2019. While I love it here, the only things I really miss are seeing all my mates - and going to/talking footy. Although i've got Kayo and can watch any games if I want - which is great. And I'd regularly watch a number of the Fox NRL shows too.

I've got many new friends over here - of whom a lot actually follow NRL! (i'm not kidding, you'd be surprised at how many folk here are interested in league. But that's for another thread - "The Case for Adelaide" in the expansion forums if you have some spare time..) But the only real outlet to banter about footy is here with my "virtual" friends on LU. I personally don't know anyone here but it's been a great place to banter etc about a sport I truly love. I thought when I moved here I'd only be a flight away every few months from catching up with my mates and going to some games - but Covid and resulting border restrictions have killed that...

So when I moved here, I've naturally found myself on LU a lot more to connect with Rugby League. But that has also coincided with the Covid Season of last year, and IMO the rank disappointment of everything about this season - not just my team, but the quality of the game as a whole. So rather than get angry, annoyed, disillusioned etc etc each week - I just had to switch it all off. The games, NRL shows, the lot.

I do genuinely love the sport, and my Dragons. I really want them both to get back on their feet and win me over again at some stage... But I fear that with "Donald" Vlandys at the wheel - ego will continue to get in the way of taking ownership of the mess he's created. The negative state of the game is not all due to him - but it's on his watch.

But for now I'll happily keep in touch on the forums like this, and see how things pan out.

Good luck to you, and to the Dragons for the rest of the year - I hope they manage to put a smile on your face.

And to the Storm n Panthers fans - good luck to you guys n girls too. You've got amazing football sides. If you do get the GF as people expect - that is actually a game I'd look forward to watching.

big hit!

f**k the excuses. The game hasn't changed that much. Any player or coach who blames the rules are the first ones I ship out of my club.

What is being exposed are those teams that want to work, and those that don't.

Lazy edge defence at the poorly performing clubs in particular are being exposed because they're not putting pressure on the opposition attack. If you jog up or just tread water on the same spot waiting for them to come to you, then you will get what you deserve.

Some of these clubs need to raise the intensity at their training. Retreat back the 10 and accelerate back up over and over again. It's attitude, it's habit, and too many teams have bad habits.

These new rules were supposed to counter Melbourne Storm tactics. Well look what's happened? They're even more dominant! Why? Because if you play for Melbourne Storm, you f**king turn up on every single play, not just when it suits.

Attacking teams want space. Defensive lines are 10m back. How do you take away space? You close it down as quick as you can. That's what Munster & Hughes do at Melbourne. That's what Luai and Cleary do at Penrith. They work just hard in defence as they do in attack. Their coaches demand it from every player on every play. These clubs have the mantra of never giving up on the play.

The competition for possession has moved from scrums and play the balls to stripping in tackles where all players but the stripper drop off. Not convinced this is progress.
The game has moved to cheap gimmick possession through stripping.
2 point FG another example of the gimmicks in our game.
