You are most probably right! The pathways program is not managed well and our head coach is not interested in talking to lower grade players.I think the biggest problem may well have been his lack of faith and knowledge about his future at the club. I work with a guy who played with Parramatta and Easts for a while and then went to the London Broncos. He said that at least twice a year at Easts every player and their manager had a meeting with the coaching staff and had a discussion about the player’s performance, their progress, goals and the club’s plan for transitioning them to the top grade if they were not currently in the NRL side. He said that while there may be ‘other reasons’ for their strong recruitment and retention record, the Roosters handled their lower tier players well and gave them a sense that they were part of a wider plan and that they actually had a pathway to the NRL. He said that at Parramatta, at least during the time he played, he never knew from one week to the next what was happening to him and he thought only injury would bring him a chance at the top grade. That is why he left and went to England.
I suspect we don’t develop transition plans for our young players, or have planning meetings to outline their path into the NRL. Maybe Robson saw the writing on the wall.....being parked with his career in neutral as long as McInnes was used as an 80 minute hooker or becoming the new Kurt Mann and getting 15 minutes here or there in different positions.
Just imagine if Mary played Robson from game one as lock and rotated him and McInnes during each of the games this season. We would sure know his suitability for first grade and have a very good idea of his quality when comparing him to McInnes.
We have unskilled old boys managing the football side of SGI. Unless we clean them out, we will never really progress.
