No idea if it's true, but it wouldn't surprise me.

With Lowrie, Benry, Mannering we've got more than enough one dimensional players. My concern is how f**ked our vanilla backrow will be when Mateo signs elsewhere.

Mateo will either stay here or head overseas. His Mrs is on the payroll at the Warriors.

I'm sure there are any number of clubs in France, England, Ireland, Japan, Italy etc etc who would be willing to do that.

This is elsewhere on the forums, but relevant here.

Carney is part of a four-player package deal the Dragons have earmarked to rescue the club next season, with Joel Thompson (Canberra), Mitchell Aubusson (Roosters) and Feleti Mateo (Warriors) in their sights.

The Dragons are also keen to lure Thompson, Aubusson and Mateo to the club. While snaring a playmaker is their priority, the club is also looking to add attacking flair to the forward pack.

Mateo could command as much as $400,000, with Aubusson and Thompson also pushing $300,000 on the open market.

I'm not convinved, but assume this isn't a player agent beat-up. We've been rumoured to be in the running for Thompson, and Mateo could go either way. We pay overs for anyone that isn't completely desperate for a gig. That's just life. So say 500k to keep Mateo and at 400k for Thompson.

I'd be tempted with Thompson. Seems to be an aggressive player with a good attitude and solid skills. Mateo on the other hand...

sounds like the sharks drug thing could prevent bukuya from coming over, and alahana mara has apparently been told to look for another club

Shadow over Warriors' talks with Bukuya

The Warriors are on a Shark hunt. Coach Matt Elliott is angling for Cronulla back-rower Jayson Bukuya, with hopes of luring him to the club next season.

Bukuya, who played for Fiji at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, has been a regular on the interchange for the troubled Sharks this season and has been battling it out for game time with Wellington-born Sam Tagataese.

He is in the last year of his contract and it is thought there are four clubs keen on the 23-year-old, as well as the Sharks, who would like to retain him.

Bukuya reportedly visited the Warriors last week with his manager.

But one complication for any club interested in Bukuya is he is one of the 14 players still at the Sharks from 2011, the season the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority is investigating over whether players were given performance-enhancing drugs.

For all of the players Asada wish to interview, contract negotiations for next year will be tricky because they face the possibility of being banned.

It is possible that any new contracts for players Asada want to talk to may involve opt-out clauses for the club in case the player is suspended.

There is no suggestion any of the players have done anything wrong regarding performance-enhancing drugs.

Warriors coach Matt Elliott wouldn't confirm they are chasing Bukuya but said the club is monitoring a number of players, while he is also still weighing up who he wants to keep from this year's squad.

One player who does appear to be on the way out is hooker Alehana Mara.

Sunday News has been told by two sources that the 23-year-old has been told to open talks with other clubs for a contract for next year.

With the Warriors clearly lifting since hooker Nathan Friend's return from injury and Pita Godinet being a superb impact player in that position, it is tough to see how Mara would force his way back into the Warriors line-up, unless as cover for injuries.

Manu re-signs to end of 2015.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Vatuvei signed until 2015
Wednesday 8 May 2013 9:34 AM

Manu Vatuvei is set to add more records to his glittering career after the Vodafone Warriors today confirmed a new two-year contract taking him through to the end of the 2015 NRL season. Photo: Photosport.
In doing so he’ll extend his career to 12 consecutive seasons, a feat not achieved by any player so far in the club’s history.
The great Stacey Jones is the only other player who has previously played a total of 12 NRL seasons for the Vodafone Warriors but his career was interrupted by two years with Les Catalans in the English Super League in 2006 and 2007 and a season off in 2008 before he finished up with one final campaign at Mount Smart Stadium in 2009.
Vatuvei, who was off-contract at the end of this season, had been the subject of much speculation about his future, his manager Peter Brown fielding expressions of interest from other NRL clubs, English Super League clubs and also from rugby union.
His new deal was announced as he prepared for ‘The Capital Clash’, the Vodafone Warriors’ historic encounter with Canterbury-Bankstown at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday night (7.35pm kick-off; match day sponsor: Vodafone). It’s the first time the club has taken a home game outside Auckland since coming into existence.
“Having my contract sorted out is a big relief. Now I can concentrate totally on the Bulldogs in Wellington this weekend,” he said.
“My heart is always here at the Vodafone Warriors and always will be.
“It’s where I wanted to stay and so did my family so I couldn’t be happier it has worked out this way.
“I love this club, the players, coaches, staff and members and all they mean to me and to my family. They do so much for us.
“At this stage of my career, we looked at other options but remaining with the Vodafone Warriors was what we wanted. I’d like to thank not just Peter (Brown) but also Wayne (Scurrah), Dean (Bell) and Matt (Elliott) for making it possible for me to stay here. It’s where I belong.”
Making his debut as an 18-year-old in 2004, Vatuvei, still only 27, is now in his 10th NRL season, joining Jones, Awen Guttenbeil, Lance Hohaia and Jerome Ropati as the only other players to have reached the landmark for the Vodafone Warriors.
As delighted as Vatuvei is to remain a Vodafone Warrior until at least 2015, first-year head coach Matthew Elliott is positively ecstatic.
“Manu is a very rare gem, a true superstar not just in our game but in sport across the board in this part of the world,” he said.
“I haven’t been here long but I immediately became aware that, in Manu, we have not just a player but a person whose influence permeates through the club in every way imaginable. He has so many wonderful qualities when he’s playing, when he’s training, when he’s out in the community or just around the club.
“I always admired him from afar and that admiration has gone to another level since being here. He’s got so much more to give the Vodafone Warriors through his deeds as a player and in all facets of club life and I know he’ll keep giving, too.”
When Vatuvei’s last contract extension was announced in August 2010, he was sitting on 75 tries, just two behind Jones’ club record 77.
Since then he has surged past that mark, scoring another 30 tries in 46 games to take his tally to 105 in 156 games, one of the leading strike rates in the NRL.
After five try-less appearances as a rookie in 2004, Vatuvei quickly established himself as a genuine try-scoring weapon. Since being the club’s second highest scorer in 2005 (9) and 2006 (10), he has finished the last six seasons as the outright top scorer four times and in a share for the honour twice with 10 tries in 2007, 16 in 2008, 13 in 2009, 20 in 2010, 12 in 2011 and 12 last year. He has stayed ahead of his career average so far this season with three tries in four games.
He also has an impressive strike rate of 13 tries in his 20 Tests for the Kiwis.

Jason Bukuya confirmed as signing until end of 2015.

Vodafone Warriors secure Bukuya

Sunday 12 May 2013 9:38 AM

Highly-regarded Cronulla back rower Jayson Bukuya (pictured) is Vodafone Warriors-bound next season after signing a two-year contract. Photo: Photosport.
Brisbane-born of Fijian descent, Bukuya had the most impressive season of his NRL career last year when he appeared in 23 of the Sharks’ 24 regular season games as well as their week one finals loss.
Confirmation of his signing comes just days after the Vodafone Warriors announced a two-year contract extension for try-scoring record holder Manu Vatuvei through to the end of the 2015 season.
Vodafone Warriors head coach Matthew Elliott said Bukuya, who played for Fiji at the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, perfectly fits the club’s requirements.
“We needed to boost our depth in the area of our back rowers and we couldn’t be happier to secure a player of the quality Jayson will bring to the club,” he said.
“He made everyone take notice of him in 2012, having a fantastic season for the Sharks.
“He’s certainly the sort of player who will benefit from the environment here at the Vodafone Warriors and one who’ll ensure there’s plenty of competition for places in the squad.”
Bukuya said while he had business to finish at Cronulla, moving to the Vodafone Warriors represented a challenge he wanted to take on.
“I’m excited about the prospect of not just moving to a new club in the NRL but going to a new country as well,” he said.
“I’ve been able to have a good look at what is being done at Warriors and they’ve got a fantastic set-up there. The gym is as good as anything there is and they’ve always had plenty of talent coming through the club.”
Bukuya made his debut as long ago as 2008 soon after his 19th birthday but had only two appearances that year and none at all in two injury-disrupted seasons in 2009 and 2010 before he returned in 2011 to revive his NRL career.
He had 11 games that season, a launching pad for his stellar 2012 campaign. Used predominantly as a starting second rower last season, Bukuya also played in the front row once. He averaged 68 minutes a match, close to 80 metres and 24 tackles.
His involved this season has been limited ti six appearances as an interchange forward.
