Round 4 Vs Warriors

2 tries from Burton - 1st one was a great kick / assist by Luai (after couple of poor bombs from Burton), 2nd try was good instinct but a lucky deflection. Terrific ball for Burns but again Luai was just as influential in that play.

He looked decent but the commentary team were riding him ridiculously hard the whole night which I think influenced people’s overall view of his performance. Granted Luai didn’t help himself with a couple of poor kicks in the last 10, I still think he looked the better for the majority of the game & the role needed outside Cleary is more suited to him than another organiser like Burton.

Not a bad issue to have though, I think they’re both capable.

The Luai bomb was brilliant, had the extra height that allowed the players to attack the ball. Agree that people are being a bit harsh on him, he was at least the equal of Burton.

Edwards Cleary and Martin back this week I'm confident we can beat the eels but they will be up for it this Friday.

Martin shouldn't walk straight into the pack IMO.

His form rounds 1 and 2 was pretty poor. I rate him highly but aside from Kenny I think our pack deserves to be unchanged. Kenny should be replaced by whoever gets dropped for Nate.

The commentary rides him because it’s obvious what a talent he is.

Luai had just as many bad kicks as Burton, it wasn’t just a couple in the last 10 minutes. Burton had that beautiful cutout ball to Crichton that was a try gone begging after Crichton fumbled it. He had another assist go begging last week when Whare didn’t get the ball down, he just does more and gets caught in bad positions a lot less. Also he ran for well over a hundred metres, broke 6 tackles and made 15 tackles and missed none. Jerome 23 tackles with 3 misses and had 2 errors compared to Burtons 0 mistakes and Luai was also responsible for one set restart. And Burton also had a line break assist which Jerome did not. I’ll say it again, that was Burtons 3rd game and he clearly was at least as good as Luai(really the stats show he was much better).

Cleary/Burton will be the long term partnership here, that is pretty obvious now. It’s just a matter of when.

Also there needs to be a spot for Naden. Sauce bombed an absolute sitter with his shit hands on the weekend which doesn’t matter at 20 nil but it would of been crucial last week and Whare really is just making up the numbers now, he had a good defensive play but our right side just is no threat. Give Naden a spot, we aren’t going to beat good teams without more points in us.

Last one - Crichtons quick draw and pass for the try that Mansour did score was so pleasing to see. Forgetting all of Crichtons huge potential the fact he understands how to position himself and draw defenders and then throw a decent pass to put the winger away is going to be so valuable playing next to kikau. Naden or waqa cant do it so we’ve never had a centre next to kikau who could make that simple play consists, I’d love to have a finisher like Too on that wing.

Haven’t spoken enough about Crichton to be honest, he is obviously a great athlete but he also has skill and a bit vision to go with it. He has received the ball on last and managed to nicely grubber it into the i goal with perfect weight both weeks he started at centre. He did it from about ten metres out last week and got us a repeat set and from close to the line on Friday he drops it on his toe and sits it up perfectly for sauce to score(which he fumbled). That is very difficult to do, not just the skill but the decision making. Most centres in that situation are gonna dump it to the winger or run back in field, twice now in a pressure situation he summed up what’s on and what’s not in a split second and pulled the right string.

Im sure Burton kicked at least 2 dead. His kicking was very poor the first half, as it was the previous 80, but it seems to get overlooked.

Burton is an outstanding talent by the looks of things but it’s the most Penrith thing ever to throw away a player for the next shiny toy that comes along. Like you said he’s played 3 games.

I don’t think there’s much between the 2 at all but Luai has/had front position imo & played well enough to hold it for the time being. I’d have Burton in 14.

In saying that I can see why people would have Burton & why they rate him, but I don’t agree he’s the obvious 6 & I don’t think picking out a few favourable stats proves it.

I said last year Crichton was a talent. It was why I wasn’t worried about the backs long term. Just get Whare out for Naden and then the backline is where it should be

The Debate over Luai or Burton Will have to wait
Apparently Luai Has a MCL injury from Friday’s game
May miss a few games

You’re bang on about people fapping over the next shiny toy. In this instance they may be right, but there’s been so many other young guys called the next star that you’d forgive anyone for being cynical.

Not sure that fixes things.

Naden is still a poor defender at centre, Mansour still offers little in attack and is a liability under the high ball.

Outside Kikau and Crichton tries will come as we saw on the weekend. Aekins maybe is an option but Whare is more of a concern for me. Unless someone like Burns goes there then it is Naden. Capewell and Nathan defend that side so that will help

What Naden lacks can be taught. You can’t teach speed and instinct. Staines and co can go on the wing if Mansour struggles later in the year

I’d prefer Naden to the wing and Burns to centre. Replace them both.

We’ve got a monster forward pack, we don’t need Mansour’s meters. Also think To’o can do a bit of the work Mansour does.

Sadly I don’t see Ivan being that bold with selections. It will take injury to do that

Burtons kicking is not being overlooked I have mentioned it every time I have mentioned Luai’s. Luai put one 3m out on the full they were both poor with their kicks for the most part. The fact is Luai should be better than a 3 game rookie, he has a lot more experience I think that is being overlooked. Luai had two errors and three missed tackles, numerous poor kicks same as Burton. I think it’s really hard to argue he was better than Burton, when you factor in that experience it gets even harder.

Burton is clearly the better talent and probably already a better player I’ve got no doubt when he has Has the same experience Jerome has now he will be a better player, we heard blocka and Ennis talking about talking about how calm Burton is, he has been that way in all 3 of his games now it’s no fluke.

It’s not fapping on at all. They’ve been our halves for the last two games we have a good comparison of the two. It seems most people favour Burton, you can write it off as getting excited about a new toy but it’s doesn’t change that Luai had no more impact than Burton the last two games.

And the truth is I am being pretty generous saying they had equal impact, there are pretty good arguments to say Burton outplayed Luai.

Thats is not good timing for Jerome if true, Burton will be hard to get out of that spot if he gets a couple more games there, Cleary will take a lot of pressure off him and really let him settle.

Not suggesting Burton didn’t play well, I’m saying we’ve seen this all before in regards to the next big thing. This time that might just be right.

If Luai had played 30-40 games in the halves then Burton’s inexperience would be more relevant as a factor to put him in front. But Luai has only played 10 games in the halves, I think there’s room for improvement with him as well.
