Scotty Dureau - Supersub or Supercoach?

LOL everyone in Newcastle knew Scotty was playing before Smith did.

It does seem Smith will go for Rogers if Mullo is out (is he definately?? I mean is it confirmed he actually has broken ribs?) but what chance he plucks someone out of the blue at 6, it wouldn't be the first time would it? Have to say I'm not that enthused at the prospect of Dureau playing woth Rogers at 6.

Thought Dureaus' defensive effort last night was a big improvement. It's sad I know Karma, but Scotty has the job now, you're gunna have to learn to love him .

Scotty looks like a wise old halfback with the beard. It actually suits the little fella. If Benny Rogers, and I know it is a big if, can produce what he is actually capable of then we will beat Souths this weekend. Call this a massive call but if the Knights win their next three games, Dureau could be the smokey for Country origin halback. His performance on Monday night was Alfie Langer like. He was always there when it counted and never shut up.

The concept of Dureau at 7 and Rogers at 6 is not all that bad IMO.

We have 2 halves who can play different styles of games. IMO Rogers and Mullo have a similair game, so Rogers and Dureau can work. I just have fears of Sutton running at Scoot all game.... will have to get Zeb to protect him.

I was gonna suggest the same thing Tim, I'm interested to see how Rogers goes in tandem with Dureau...on paper it could be a goer. Mainly because Mr Scoot (new name i see) will do the organising/kicking etc and Rogers can just do his thing when required (like Gidley does these days).

Just as long as Ben doesn't do the long kicking ;-)

Be funny if Rogers/Dureau end up being the prime combo in the NRL, where would that leave Mullen?

Of course that won't happen, but my point is I don't mind the Rogers/Dureau combo, agree with what Big Tim said.

Just watched the replay today, Dureau didn't play all that well but he did what was asked of him even a few errors didn't stop him from reaching his task - I think that really shows his maturity. He is not a flashy player like an Andrew Johns or a Scott Prince but he seems to get the job done and keep the structure of the attack together. However, I'm really surprised by Dureau's long kicking game. FOr a guy his size he sure can belt it a long way. Those 40/20s sure come in handy. If he really has improved from last season I definitely would like to see more of him for the next few games.

With games breakers like Mullen and Gidley in the side, combined with fast little men like De Gois around the rucks, agressive boopers like Cross and Tafua, Pato and Houston ripping the edges and huge backs like Sau and Uate I think all we really need is Dureau to be consistent (doesn't have to be great) each week keeping the attack together and giving us options at the end of each set. If Dureau can do that perhaps all we really need is another star back or forward and we should be consistently in the finals each season.

You forget he did it directing the team himself no mullen, he also did it on the back of poor go forward (it looked like faas and house were doing or the work)

I think his kicking was outstanding given he was the sole kicker under massive kick pressure.

His backing up to House was great.

His inside ball to put Zeb in the space was first class (shame Faas dropped Zebs pass).

Was Joey like a class above when he first came into FG? Does anyone else think Duearu can become anything close to a superstar? Just asking not provocking anything.

Dureau might become a Joey like playmaker and organiser in time, but he will never be our most dangerous attacking player with the ball in hand and our best defender, as Joey was at his very best.

At the risk of getting into more Dureau debate ( which is not intended ), I can't believe the accolades he is getting in here.

Is it simply a case of forum members overstating his achievements on Monday simply because I don't rate him?

Come on guys. He played well on Monday night, and I'd be the first to say he did. HOWEVER... surely the way he played is a standard HALFBACK performance that every team expects of their halfbacks!

I mean he played very well, but he still has major errors in his game ( which you'd like to see reduce now he has played a bit of first grade ) and he is far from the ' superstar ' that some people would like to hope he is.

He will be a solid at best halfback in the NRL if he continues to get an opportunity.

I will be the first person here to congratulate him on good form, but fresh in my mind is some very good performances for the Knights in 2008 which were followed up by total trash ( which led to his dropping and his new role as SuperSub ).

There's no doubt on his day the dude can play. But can he do it week in week out on a consistent level? Well the jury is still out.

After all, the other day he kicked a 40/20, threw a couple of nice passes ( one to set up a try ), and a nice effort backing up for the try he scored.

That's what the job of a NRL halfback is. He isn't doing anything special, he is doing what is EXPECTED to play at this level.

If he can continue to do that, then good luck to him.
