That's a likelyish first grade Raiders team with the locals in bold. A lot more of the fringe first graders are locals.

3 Queenslanders - Zillman, Logan, Costigan.
All the rest are country NSW except Bronx Goodwin who is from Perth.

*EDIT - Colin Best is from Sydney
That's just the Canberra juniors playing for the Raiders, too - there's quite a few playing at other clubs.

so you think Widdop is a local?

he moved to Aus in 2005 ffs. he was 16 or very close to it and had been playng league for years

Yes he's a local, yes he's a Melbourne junior (you'll have to enlighten me immigration minister when he qualifies for that status) but no he's not that milestone "Melbourne born/raised" junior like the other 7(?) in the article (you must have forgotten about them).

All of whom have benefited from the near $1 million a year that the Storm now spend on youth programs in Victoria.

I think the bottom line in this debate is that mistakes were made when the Storm entered the comp.

Instead of been given a couple of years notice and helped with the setting up of the right support structures they were a rushed entity at a time when the game was divided.

Hence why they scour Australia and NZ more then any other team to find talent, though thats no differnt to Benji at Tigers, SBW at Bulldogs, Dave Taylor at the Broncos etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

However they are now spending $1 million together with the ARL's $8 million and the results have been tremendous.

We are like the only real traditonal team left in the comp who has had the same name and colours through out it's existance.
My point was it doesn't matter if your a traditional club or not. If the Roosters have been around for 100 years you would think they would have their own junior system in place and use their own junior players. They don't and They have no excuse.
Storm are still a young club and are growing each year. Rugby league in Australia needs to expand out of NSW and QLD.
The only culture your area has is a culture of throwing petrol bombs at coppers.

First step the NRL could take is making sure that all the storm games are shown every Sunday afternoon with a NRL highlights of the rest of the games afterwards. It really doesn't matter if they are replaying the game from Friday night, because nobody got to watch it anyhow at 2am. At least the exposure would help people understand the game better and showcase it every week at the same time.

That is an outstanding idea IMO.

Melbourne needs to have a RL presence if we want a truely national comp. WA should be next

rubbish

the first FNF game was on at a decent hour there this year and it was up against nothing and rated fairly poorly

a few years ago i'm sure all their Saturday 3pm games were shown live on 9 Melbourne. again nobody watched

i think the NRL structured the draw especially so 9 would show them

If your talking about the tigers v storm game i think your wrong, however neither of us have the figures so it's pretty ridiculous to use that argument.

I also don't really remember games being aired at 3pm in the afternoon live into Melbourne. TBH without backing your claims it just sounds like your making them up.

The fact is showing the game on tv will only help it grow in Melbourne. It makes the storms task all the more difficult when the product they are producing can't even be shown on tv. Kind of makes it hard to get more people interested in the game.

Not to mention there have been a large number of shows which have bombed terribly which channel 9 have kept on the air. For examply Mick Malloys show this year was a horrible bomb and yet channel 9 kept it on the air for the full duration of the season. Surely if they can show this tripe they can make room for storm games to be shown live.

I would.

i would also bring SA back in and take the full on assualt against afl without a melbourne franchise.

SA may just be the most dominant AFL state at the moment. Also it's a very very small market and doesn't hold nearly as many benefits as a market like Melbourne.

Melbourne may be the biggest sporting market in Australia so for yous to just say not to even bother with it is short sighted and frankly stupid.

I'm sure the NRL would do this, why don't we give up on the massive market that is Melbourne to try and break into the tiny SA market which due to AFL dominance is almost impossible and will have very small rewards even if we manage it.

Theres more to Souths than just Redfern. But Roosters have 0% culture, take from everyone else and give back nothing to the game. Not saying this because I dont like them. It's just true. They should relocate to Central Coast. They would get actual crowds for a change, they will have a junior base for a change. But they probably wouldn't look after them.

a local junior is someone who grew up and first played in their area. it's also got to be the only area they played League. a kid that started playing league in Halifax England and moved to Aus when they were 15 is not a Melbourne junior

Folau is a bit of mixture. one thing he isn't is a Melbourne junior

Todd Carney was born in Goulburn NSW
Michael Dobson was born in Junee NSW
Michael Weyman was born moruya NSW
Terry Campese was born inQueanbeyan NSW ( close enough to ACT )
Joe Picker was born in Bigga NSW

Fair enough.

Though if your annoyed that we're stealing other clubs juniors then by your standards Issy, Kevin Proctor (NZ), Adam Blair (NZ), Sam Joe (TS) Will Chambers (NT/QLD) Greg Inglis (Bowraville) Antonio Kaufusi (NZ/Bundaberg) Ryan Hoffman (Camp/Adelaide/NZ/Canberra/QLD/etc/etc) Cooper Cronk(Union) Billy Slater are all fair game as they either we'rent in a place long enough to qualify as a "junior" product or their is no NRL team within 200 kms of them.

So therefore what are you complaining about, all we've done is give homeless kids a place to call home.

this is what Victorian leage players say about the Storm

geez the Storm are doing well

not focusing on local talent at all

so the storm do have local talent then?

wow, earlier on you were saying they had no juniors, and spent more on juniors than other clubs.

now youve admitted they spend the same as other clubs and do have local players.

thanks for making the argument for me.

why not?

WA have a lot more to offer in regards to players. that's more than Melbourne can say

isn't the object to get people playing the game?

melbourne have a lot to offer the nrl in terms of innovation in how the game is played and development of players for queensland, nsw and australia.

i cant really think of what parramatta bring to the nrl other than a team that choke whenever they get near a GF, or when they actually make it.

im thinking 2001 & 2005 in particular.

though that semi in 98? i think it was where parra blew an 18 point lead vs the dogs and got rolled over is another example as well.

its always funny watching parra choke whenever they are favourites in a semi or GF

stupid and geniused

you should give up thinking too

im thinking 2001 & 2005 in particular.
