Western Corridor NRL bid

Brisbane people will support an alternative to the Donkeys in very good numbers if the club is run well and there is no Superleague rubbish to ruin everything.

This.

It's amazing how many people in Brisbane hate the Bronco's. They'll have no problem attracting fans.

And even more people hate when they are lied to about what area a certain team represents, that is why the Northern Eagles and the original Tweed head (Gold Coast) team.

People know when they are being lied to and it is the reason why the Western Jets won't get supporters from Toowoomba and Logan areas amongst others.

Can you and everyone else on this forum stop calling the Queensland bid the Jets. It is insulting to Newtown fans. There was only, and will ever be, one Jets as far as top-flight Rugby League is concerned and that's Newtown - regardless of whether Newtown are no longer in the top-flight. The 2nd Brisbane team / Ipswich bid will have to pick another name if they get in the NRL.

The offical name of the team is the Western Jets so i don't have a problem with anybody referring to this bid as the Western Jets.

And besides, using the Jets name will piss off a signifcant part of your potential supporter base as it will alienate everyone else in Brisbane that doesn't have any association with Ipswich.

Couldn't agree more and it is something that is already happening. Everybody calls them the Ipswich Jets when they are infact the Western Jets, that and more things are alienating potential supporters already.

There is no official bid name afaik. The only person pushing the name Western Jets is the mayor of Ipswich and the actual bid is being run by the Ipswich Jets football club. Read the first post in the thread.

Cute. Newtown left the NSWRL first grade before it had even expanded interstate. They’re about as relevant to the NRL as Wynnum-Manly.

I thought hey held a night and announced the bid officially with the name.

Ah well, goes to show how amateur it really is, hasn't even got a name.

Imo there will be no expansion to at least 2015. And then the two new teams should be Perth and a second Brisbane side.

The last team named the Jets in top flight RL was a team called the Ipswich Jets. They had Langer and the Walters twins playing for them at the time and they would take on teams like Wynnum and Redcliffe who were filled with Test and Origin stars.

I think the Newtown Jets were playing in Metro Cup at the time.

Newtown have been the Jets since 73 as you'd well know. They're really the Bluebags.

The Jets should have a good look at how the Dockers did it. They face a very similiar situation as the Dockers did coming into Perth against the might of the WC Eagles.
Majority of their fans do not live in Fremantle but follow the Dockers as they targetted a different demographic, different geographical area and alternative to a team many disliked and saw as elitist. And they play out of the same stadium asthe Eagles that is 30mins from Fremantle with no issues.

Did you complain like this 30 years ago when Ipswich was thinking about a nickname for their team?

Did you complain about the Newcastle soccer team choosing that name just a year or so back?

By the way. What does bluebags mean?

No it shows how little you know about it.

You know almost nothing about the bid, yet you are the loudest detractor.

You look foolish everytime you say something.

Totally disagree. The NSWRL is the forerunner to the NRL. Newtown played in the competition that is the forerunner to the NRL. Wynnum-Manly didn't.

Don't believe me? Check out David Middletown's yearbook and have a read through the list of premiership winners - 2010 says St. George Illawarra, 1999 syas Melbourne, 1998 says Brisbane, 1994 says Canberra, 1983 says Parramatta, 1976 says Manly, and 1910, 1933, and 1943 says Newtown.

No didn't complain 30 years ago because Ipswich was playing in a separate competition, but I wouldn't have blamed Newtown if they did complain. It as no different to Balmain Tigers/Easts Tigers or Penrith Panthers/Wests Panthers or Wests Magpies/Souths Magpies.

Newcastle Jets play Soccer, not Rugby League.

Not exactly sure about the Bluebags name, but I think it has something to do with the blue bags that were used in washing machines at the turn of the century, which according to folklore were used to then make players jerseys century ago, hense the all-blue Newtown jersey.

Newtown had the Jets name first. Whilst the QRL competition did have some first-class players competing in it at the time, whether the QRL competition could be considered 'top flight' rugby League just prior to the Broncos entry into the NSWRL is debatable, as the NSWRL competition was universally regarded as the more superior competition at the time, hence the need for the Broncos to enter the NSWRL in the first place.

And besides even if we all agree that the QRL competition is considered 'top flight', what do you think the reaction from Balmain would be if the Easts Tigers entered the NSWRL competition in 1988 instead of the Broncos? Or the reaction from Penrith Panters to Wests Panthers entering the NSWRL in 1988? Or Wests Magpies/Souths Magpies? Top-flight QRL competition or not they would not have been allowed to keep the name.

Yeah the Bluebags.

Went to a game at Lang Park in 86 between Redcliffe and Ipswich and their were more future or current internationals on show that day than Newtown ever produced during their time as the Jets.

If anyone should be allowed to run with 'The Jets' in a national comp, it's Ipswich.

If there was any hope of Newtown entering the NRL then there may be some argument, but there isn't so it doesn't matter if an NRL team uses the Jets name. Bit like the GC not being able to use Dolphins, its ridiculous, I am pretty sure that every name under the sun is bieng used by some team somewhere. As long as it doesn't clash with an exisitng or potential NRL side then I don't see a problem.

The Bluebags which became the Jets, playing out of the NSWRL competition which is the forerunner to the current NRL. These are facts you cannot dispute.
