What if Jarryd Hayne doesn't make the 49ers cut? Will he return to the NRL?

You think NRL players coming in once every 4 years and embarrassing all the union world by beating them at their own game would PROMOTE Union? It would show them up as a 2nd class sport, while also give league elites proper international competition to take part in.

Hell if we tie test selection to 7s you'd probably also enhance the international game for league as players opt to represent Fiji, Samoa, Tonga etc permanently so they can go to the olympics.

Either way, as an Olympic sport the selection process should be as open as possible, not restricted so much that the top 500 players in the country are ineligible
What planet are you on?

So explain to me again what's in it for Union and particularly Union 7s?

They are also trying to promote a world circuit annually that seems to attract decent crowds...

In the unlikely event that NRL players are going to come in and dominate on their biggest stage once every 4 years I think it's probably better for them to avoid the "embarrassment".

The Sevens Circuit was established to expand the game. Olympic recognition is a side issue, an important one, for sure, but whether or not Sevens is an Olympic sport the circuit looks like continuing indefinitely.

NRL players would have to make significant sacrifices to take part, as would their employers. Is that likely to happen?

A lot of the comments here are about the perceived quality of the Australian squad currently in London. This is not the final squad, which will be much better.

As for NRL players "dominating" the whole tournament, that is a moot point. Firstly, the players would have to qualify by playing the sport, and to do that they would have to learn the rules and also would have to have at least 8 weeks of specialised conditioning and some of them would have to lose body mass. Secondly, they would have to beat the best in the Sevens world.

And would NRL players also be allowed to represent other nations? New Zealand? Fiji? England (or rather Great Britain)?

Finally, if Australia wins a gold medal at Sevens, all of us would be happy, no matter which code we prefer, no matter the background of the the players.

By the way, how dominant is SBW? (Hint: not very).

One where NRL players can walk into any sport in the world and just dominate it from the start.

I get the feeling there is a rather large group of posters here who would be unhappy if they did. It's the same group who abuse anyone who watches Union as well.

Yep, I hope Australia gets nowhere near a medal in the olympics in Union. The idea that RL should in any way shape or form do something that makes rugby union look better than the dog turd of a game it is is laughable. f**k Vichy Union and anyone who follows it. Don't think I could be much clearer than that lol.

Always go for aussies. Always. No exceptions. One big team. Expect the same from people everywhere. Putting team results ahead of your own personal interests is what makes sport great. It is what makes any team and accomplishment great. I feel sympathy for people who miss out on that. Who don't get it. There is hope for you yet.

Yeah but he's from WA, every election they say they want to become their own country, so he shouldn't be going for Aus anyway!

I find it interesting that everyone goes on about the arrogance and elitisim of rugby union yet here we have league fans proclaiming that australian league players would automatically win the gold if eligible. Hilarious. If you want to play at the Olympics you are in the wrong sport. Just like AFL players.

I'm Bi lol. Only had half the brain and part of my civility removed when I signed up for the Aussie life.

But I am all League and hate uNion with a passion, screw country first when it comes to union, the worse outcome for any team playing in Union, be it England or Wallabies I am happy with.

In England League fans hate union the same way League fans here hate AFL, only even more so!

I would still go for Australia in every game they were playing unless it was against England/GB. Thats where I'm from but this is home, even if I'm not a citizen.
But Union can just go and f**k itself no matter where its from southern shandy drinking wankers.

If this pommy ranga coach of Fiji is fair dinkum Hayne won't get within cooee of this side. These Fijians are all 6.5 and are all lightning, give them half a gap and they are scoring.

Hayne in his current state looks a fish out of water, looks lost, slow and bulky.

He would be better off trying out for the Aussie side, he would at least give them some size.

Not sure how genuine this "Fiji rugby reached out to me" line is. I don't doubt Hayne would be a great player but they just don't need him. That side is so good as it is.

Only advantage j can see is the exposure they would be getting from it

Don't be daft he got cut but was allowed some time to try and save face whilst his agent tried to pull a new job out of his arse ASAP.
