What Movies Have You Seen III

Having worked in book retail and publishing when the popularity of this novel was at its peak and everyone wanted to read it I honestly can't rap my head around this.

I read the first 30 or 40 pages that one of my reps got me and put it down. I mean, working in a hardware store and the guy comes in wanting cable ties? Give me a break!
There's a piss funny review of it on goodreads;

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/340987215

I went to the launch of the Fifty Shades "official pleasure collection" which is just branded sex toys years ago (there was also free food and free piss. Don't judge me) and I stood in the corner for most of the event with one of my colleagues shaking our heads and cringing and trying not to laugh at some of the "demonstrations" and promotional material that was being rolled out.

"Secretary" on the other hand deals with similar subject matter but is more tasteful and much better written than FSG would been (I've not seen it and don't intend to).

There was a book written from the man's perspective as well and EL James held a Q&A on Twitter for it and hilarity ensued.

Hateful 8 - Has it's moments and is well worth sitting through, but not at the same level as most of Tarantino's others, 7.5/10

The Big Short - The more i think about it, the more i liked it. Don't think it's oscarworthy but it's definitely worth a watch. Steve Carrell deserved the nomination over Bale IMO. 8/10

The Ridiculous 6 - A cowboy film with Adam Sandler and friends. Usually I can enjoy anything with Sandler in it but this was possibly the worstcomedy I have ever seen. 2 hours and i didn't chuckle once. 1/10.

The Intern - Cute little film with De Niro and Hathaway that i really enjoyed. 7/10.

Sin City 2 - 7/10. Solid with fantastic performances, but lacked the soul the first had. Amazing how the little things make all the difference between a great movie and bunch of guys standing in front of green screens.

Showdown in Little Tokyo - 5/10. Terrible 80's buddy cop cheese-fest starring Dolph Lundgren and Brandon Lee. Could have been an interesting pair, Dolph holds it together and is a better actor than given credit for, but f*k me Lee is awful in this, hard to believe he went on to make The Crow

If ever there was a movie on emasculating the Japanese male then this is it.

Think I said earlier that Carell was phenomenal but Pitt was very, very good too despite minimal screen time.

All that money. It was like HIH times 40 billion! Sad stuff!

Got me a whole stack of 2 for $20 blu rays with 20% at JB.

First up, watched The Edge of Tomorrow.

Expected very little, enjoyed it a fair whack.

We'll see if I enjoy any of the others.

Another +1 for edge of tomorrow. I re-watched it just the other day and love the mixture of humour and action. Also I would do so many dirty, perverted things to Emily blunt

Edge of Tomorrow is one of the most entertaining movies I've seen this century to date.

I rate it that highly. So much fun and chugs along at a cracking pace, without sacrificing character development.

Hateful 8.

Absolute shite. 1 star out of 5.

Dialogue heavy, ego stroking, long winded rubbish. We all knowTarantino can write fantastic dialogue but it DOESN'T mean he HAS to! But it's Tarantino so the fans and the critics will kiss his ass. It made Death Proof seem watchable by comparison and that was an utterly pointless film too!

The "whodunnit" part was remakably like Reservoir Dogs and even that film is criminally overrated in my opinion. The highlight was Jennifer Jason Leigh playing "Jim Jones at Botany Bay" on guitar and singing. My mate's band used to do a ripping cover of that song!

Inglorious Basterds and Pulp Fiction are the only 2 films he ever should have made. Kill Bill 1 is good but Part 2 kind of tainted it for me.

Enemy Mine. Movie from way back in 1985 with Dennis Quaid. Haven't seen it for easily 15 years, holds up really well, especially for a sci-fi. Story about a man and an alien who are at war who end up stranded on a planet together. Worth a watch if you've never seen it.
