But Watson's a businessman - not a sportsman.
Scurrah was a terrible CEO yet Watson didn't fire him- just moved him to a position where jersey sales was his sole focus. From our point of view rewarding failure.

Perhaps Watson is satisfied with falling gate sales - maybe his sole focus is TV revenue. Maybe on-field success isn't a KPI.

I think his biggest worry may be being investigated for match rigging. The team we have on paper shouldn't be in 13th place.

I wouldn't mind seeing either Cleary or Toovey... but outside of those guys I'd want a better CV from a coach than the other 3 offered. Morgan would be the best, then Kearney (weighting rep coaching below reserve grade clubs/SL). Perhaps someone who has a longer coaching history, with impressive results. Walkers stand out for me, Ipswich are down in 10th at the moment but the team they had built was absolutely decimated after last year so it's understandable, at least for now. And if nothing else it would be entertaining...

Of the guys on that list from top pref to bottom;
Toovey
Cleary
Morgan
Kearney
Kidwell

But adding to that list- throw in the Walkers (there's probably one or two more lower grade coaches with plenty of experience - Brennan? - who deserve to be mentioned on that list) right up alongside Toovey.

Which is why I can't fathom why we offloaded Cleary. He regularly got us in the 8 and at least put us in a position to compete for the title, sure we weren't title favorites but at least there was life in our season and us being the Warriors we have a couple of the playoffs a real shake up. Felt good to at least be part of the big dance.

Look at us now, it's a 16 team comp ffs, it's ridiculous that we can't even crack the top half of the ladder.

I can't either. I can't fathom how he gets called an 'ok' coach and isn't given the dues his record deserves. Given the woeful records of every other coach apart from DA, doesn't that suggest he's a miracle bloody worker? It makes me laugh that people wouldn't have Ivan back. Like they've actually forgotten how cool it was to be in finals matches (anyone remember Roosters 08 in Auckland? I do, it was epic) and that making it to a GF is somehow not a bloody note-worthy thing.

Would we have the worst record in the past 5 years? I'm thinking maybe only us and Parra would have missed every finals series since 2012? And that'll change this year if they're not pinged points (yeah, I'm already locking us in for another September off)

I think the Walkers are too high-risk for us. They've achieved something great with Ipswich but such an alternative style, unproven at NRL level, gee that's not for us. Someone like a no-hoper Tigers outfit or the Knights, maybe. But not a side whose nation rests on it. Doyle won't go near them.

Brennan was hyped up as a first grade coach in waiting who needed a gig by Gould, he then fired Ivan and hired a Broncos dud (who admittedly is going okay this year). So I wouldn't be signing a guy who Gus didn't back.

Toovey, as I've said, has indicated he doesn't want back in yet. And I doubt it'd be with us when he does. So I feel like he's 100% out.

Of the guys I feel in the frame, I'm as follows:

Ivan
Daylight (good coach)
Morgan
Kearney
Kidwell
Jones

I totally get the sentiment RE the Walkers, but I don't think they're nearly as radical as they are sometimes made out to be. The kickoffs thing is the big departure that everyone grabs on to, yet I think going for possession from that kick - unless specific circumstances demand otherwise - is actually the percentage play there. They also weren't some lucky overnight sensation - they've been in charge of Ipswich for over 5 seasons, taking a team who had failed to make the finals the year before they took over consistently into the finals, despite not really making any one huge overhaul in the playing roster.. something I think applies to us much more than it does to the likes of the Tigers.

I agree that Toovey is doubtful in the extreme - was listing my preference from that list without regard to reality. Jones at the bottom I'd agree with - he just needs more time to get the runs on the board that the other guys already have.

As for Brennan- I take no notice of what Gus Gould says or does on that sort of issue.. he did, after all, fire Ivan - whose main crime appears to have been presiding over a consistenly injury decimated roster - for a guy who really underwhelmed at the Broncos, and while the Panthers have had a lot of close games, I don't think they've actually been unlucky, and I don't really rate them that highly this year. Anyway, point being that I don't think Gus' words or actions are much of an endorsement or reason to avoid Brennan... because that dude has the runs on the board.

Agree the Panthers haven't been terribly unlucky - but they've played the best sides and competed well - they're very young, and have a great attitude - lot to like about them and Griffin seems to be doing ok...

Someone like Brennan might be ok, but as I said elsewhere I'd rather a systemic change top to bottom - couple of years of development - but that's better imo than the shit we're being dealt anyway with squads that are supposed to be top 8 or even 4

I wonder how many players are in the process of asking for a release?
Does that wake Doyle up?
Or he is using it as a way to release the guys that need to move on?
If I was a player would I be asking for a release???? Hmmmmmmm

To what club though.. surely a players value would drop after a season or two with the Warriors..

Not necessarily. Another club would buy a player on potential knowing that, with a strong environment and good coaching, they will reach their full potential. Then there's Mateo.............

I can't remember who posted it, Rhythm it may have been, but didn't he say from the CEO chat with the fans that Ben had asked for a release last year but was talked out of it? Or was that a rumour?

I would hope Doyle knows that losing McFadden is a very small price to pay compared to Ben alone, or anyone else (minus his new son-in-law Charlie, he and Sione Lousi can go)

Wasn't it Mutts also who made that "sinking ship" quip in 2012?
You can tell his head isn't always on the job, because when it is he's close to one of the NRL's best.

You have a finite time playing the game and those who truely want to win a premiership would be looking to jump ship if what is being wheeled out to the public is also being told to the players.
Rather than those who are there just to collect a pay cheque not caring.

Let's keep hoping that Doyle is keeping his cards close to his chest, trying to create stability at the club that will attract the better coach.

This new off off field salary cap NRL is talking about, good or bad for us?

I would like to see the Warriors have a go a getting Brian Smith. Underrated coach Imo. They guy has the ability to rebuild clubs. He also has the ability to bring out the best in players ie Todd Carney. There is an argument that Smith can't take his teams to the next level however, he has done well with the teams he has had.

Bad. The reality is that we have to rely largely on Australian talent for coaching due the superior systems there, and that always comes at a premium when you're asking them to relocate.

Bad. Awful. It's been shown that local coaching options haven't worked for us, and when we lose the ability to pay overs for Australians - which we have to - then that's detrimental for us.

I hope this off field cap is going to be a soft cap / luxury tax type deal. That would be the option that makes the most sense.

But then, this in the NRL - when did common sense ever come into things?

Yeah, it shouldnt come down to the size of the pockets as that puts wee nz at a big disadvantage.

Regarding common sense, obstructions seem to be the main issue. We were the beneficiaries yesterday and about time we got a bit of luck from the bunker, but im sure we will get burned again later in the year if they dont show abit more discretion. The second dragon no try was a ridiculous call. It seems the Letter of the Law is being upheld when common sense should prevail.
