But he has been re-selected? Twice in fact? He featured in series against NZ, South Africa and Sri Lanka? He only lost his spot because he was undone badly by Kyle Abbott in Hobart and Herath in Sri Lanka?

IIRC the Kiwis also added to his downfall, same issue too and like I said the interview was after he got dropped so obviously after those series

He was never dropped after playing the West Indies, so I'm not even sure when these comments that somehow didn't get printed anywhere were even made?

Like, he played the NY test in Sydney against the West Indies, then played in NZ on Feb 12th which was our next test match...he was dropped in Sri Lanka, and Usman Khawaja said some stuff about them being scapegoats while Burns didn't say anything. Then he missed selection for the SA home series, replaced Darsh for Hobart and was dropped again.

But the Kiwis series was after the Windies....?

I really think Burns has burnt his bridges after his comments when he was dropped after the series against the Windies,

Imo, despite his poor form, Renshaw is exactly what we need - a top order batsman, who will fight, tooth and nail, for his wicket.

Plus, he just came off scoring a triple century (hey - it still counts!).

I'm unabashedly a Renshaw fan, though, so I'm probably biased - though you can't tell me he is a worse option at Test level than Aaron Finch...

I honestly think you’re confusing Burns with someone else Twiz - I can’t find any reference to this at all.

He was man of the match in one of the two tests in NZ. He made 170 and 65 in Christchurch. I don’t recall thd comments you are referring to either, but if they were made I hope they were in regards to the merkin selectors giving him the flick 2 tests after that.

Us and the Windies are the only reason his test average looks Finch-like...

Lot of flat wickets against us, and like everyone else he did pretty well - his technique isn't great, but in your conditions he'd have to be a better bet than Finch

definitely Joe Burns and whilst the Windies instigated the weakness the Kiwis added to it and the interview was after he got dropped so must have been after the Kiwis series too as he wasn't dropped before the Kiwi series

I will never forget it as I thought it was a pretty stupid thing to say

These are the comments from Burns that have been published after he was dropped in Sri Lanka

Joe Burns said:
"I missed out in Sri Lanka, I missed out last Shield game, so I'm not getting too far ahead of myself," he said.

"I've got to prepare well for this game. It's going to be a massive challenge and just get my head down and make as many runs for the team as possible."

"At the end of the day, I've come in through injury but every time I play for Australia it doesn't really change for me. I'm always trying to compete as hard as I can for Australia for my teammates and trying to do the job that's asked of me," he said.

"So nothing really changes whoever I play, whatever team it is, where you bat, whatever. I'm always going out there with the same task at hand."

Joe Burns said:
(On Usman's comments that they were scapegoats)

"It's all individual, I guess."

"I can only speak for myself. I wasn't making runs and the team was losing, so that's what happens in professional sport."

"I just have to learn as much as I can from that series, which I certainly have done."

"I haven't really thought about selection."

All of that seems incongruous with what you are claiming he said. I'd suggest Timbo is probably on the money, and you are either misremembering who said what, or misinterpreting it.

Part Two (because for some reason the full post generated an error and wouldn't post)

Joe Burns said:
"The toughest moment – the first Test-match loss I had was actually the first Test in Kandy. For me, I just want to be part of successful teams. It actually hurt being part of a team for your country, losing a Test match for the first time," Burns told Fairfax Media on Wednesday.

"It was a new experience. It was tough. You do all this work, you want to play well for the Australian people, you go out there and ... get well beaten, it's disappointing.

"I have played enough now to know that selection is part of the game. You can't let your emotions get involved in that. It's a tough game and it becomes harder. If you are not selected, you are just making sure you are giving yourself every chance to be making runs in your next game, wherever that is.

"It's natural to be disappointed when you are not selected. You would be disappointed if it didn't hurt and you want to be playing for Australia. It was tough news, but if you are not making runs and the team is losing those are the things that can happen."

Joe Burns said:
"I don't know what the [selection] situation is. It would only be a distraction if you were thinking like that. At the time, that you get left out of the third Test match, you know there is work to be done," Burns said.

"You can't fluff over that by looking forward too far. You want to analyse what you want to do better. I have had good prep training ... I just want to be part of successful teams. The day I start focusing on selection is the day I will probably wake up a sad and lonely guy."

None of that sounds like a man who "blamed the selectors" at all....

(And apologies for doing this in three posts, I kept getting some "internal server error" so had to split it up)

I see Maddinson got a 100, have he recovered from his comical intro to test cricket? Surely he's not that bad?

Just seen he's had his arm broken - buit was he in the frame?

He was only in the Vic sides because they had three batsmen in the test team tbh

Prior to this his Shield form saw him sacked by NSW

I’d rather we invest in a talented 22 year old who has the game to succeed at test level. Instead they go for a fat pie eating slogger.
