Hughes really should take a leaf from Clarke's book, and LEAVE more balls. He is playing like it is a ODI or a T20. As an opening bat, he plays at way too many balls and the ball moves for an hour or two. Lets the bowlers bowl to you as a batsman. I would love nothing more than Hughes to be 15 n.o at lunch rather than be out for 20 in the 4th over. It would show he has maturity in his approach.

if he leaves balls in his only scoring zone, how will he score runs ?

The point isn't to leave them forever. But to allow yourself to get in before goin hard. Get to 20 by flicking onto the onside anything too straight. THEN allow yourself some cover drives. Then when there isn't 4 slips and three gullies, go for the cut.

in other words, tell the bowlers to bowl crap till he gets his eye in

yeah, that'll work

Don't tell them to bowl crap. But they won't bowl every single ball perfectly. Ignore the good balls until you get your eye in. Only play the shit balls.

That's what every batsman should do early.

You will score runs by batting time, and not every bowler is Dale Steyn FFS! It just means that every ball outside off should not be played at in the first hour, leave them alone. Look at Alistair Cook, do you see him slashing outside off most of the time, no, he leaves them alone.
