stop making sense, we're not used to that in here

I really dont think Marsh is a long term answer either, he may be good for a year or so but his back injuries mean he cannot play out a full season, much like Harris

Marsh is a long term option provided he stays fit but you are right that is unlikely to happen. I was really hoping Hughes could fix himself up but his technique is getting him out too often at the moment.

I'd prefer Hughes to make f**k all because I think Khawaja need to stay in the side and I fear if Hughes makes runs then Khawaja and Warner make way for Marsh and Watson.

I'd prefer all three to fill their boots along with Ponting who then announces his retirement so Watson can take his spot and creakyback Marsh can fill in (maybe).

I'm a bit the same and I was a huge fan of his and he may very well make it assuming he gets dropped for a few years and makes some changes

I just think he has not improved enough and he has not changed his technique enough and its too easy for the opposition to work him out, all he has to do is drop his hands for that short ball over the stumps but his body position and technique is such that he just cant drop his hands otherwise it will hit him in the body

if only he had a pull shot

all due respect to the kiwi attack, but they worked him out pretty easily

That magic technique has got Khawaja less runs at a lower average since he's been back in the team. In that same period Hughes has 2 innings higher than Khajwajas best.

Like I've said before, they should both be kept in the team over the longrun. They are both in my 11 now and for the forseeable future. They should be our openers for the next 10 years. But if one of them gets dropped, Hughes cannot be dropped first.
Do you actually watch cricket or just look at players stats on Cricinfo?
Khawaja is the superior player.

I can't believe how poor he is off his pads. He has improved in that area but to make the runs he has essentially cutting and driving is painting our domestic comp in a bad light IMO.

Reminds me alot of Marto when Flemming worked him out pretty quick, he just put 2 gullys in and Marto couldn't help himself, then all of a sudden he developed a pull shot after realizing his waggon wheel needed changing

he became a better batsman for it, so maybe if Hughes can make similar changes to his game he may become a better player for all the mistakes he is making now

Yeah a couple of Hussey's cracking pulls forward of square would quickly change the bowler's thinking.

By the same token Hayden couldn't cut for shit. He was always looking to belt the bowler back down the v and then if they got short looked for the pull. Not being able to play 360deg didn't stop him scoring 30 tons near on 9000 runs at over 50. Waugh was kind of like Hughes in that he didn't hook or pull (by choice) and so just looked to deflect off the hip. He was at his absolute peak in those years he left the hook and pull in the kit bag. Hughes needs to work out a method that works for him. If he doesn't have faith in the pull then it probably isn't for him. Who knows he might go with Katto's crab across to off stump? Then he can turn much more onto the leg side and maybe open up the off side field a bit more his bread and butter shots.

The thing I always say to people is that Hughes is tough. You don't write off tough too soon. Those buggers just won't quit.

I agree. I must admit that I have seen quite a bit of Hughes and although I haven't been impressed with what I have seen of him, I think he's worth persevering with for a little longer at least before thinking of dropping the guy.

If Clarke knows what he's doing as captain he is going to make 100 photocopies of Ross Taylors quotes (the ones where he was mocking a kid who made more runs than him in Brisbane and was hoping he'd get picked) and put it everywhere. In Hughes kitbag, in his room, everywhere. And when Hughes goes out to bat on Friday, every run he scores, every boundary he hits he should dedicate to Taylor.

The worst thing you can do to a fighter is disrespect him, and I get that "fighter" vibe from Hughes. I really want him to get a big 150 or 200 and to shove every one of those runs up Taylors arse.

It may prove to be a very, very silly comment from a guy who should be concentrating both on his own batting & improving his struggling side.

Marcus North was the height of averageness. He got every ounce of talent out of himself for that average of 35. He was never getting any better. He was already 30 or so, he was at his peak.

Phil Hughes has the talent and potential to be so much better than an average of 35. He needs to be persevered with.

Steve Waugh averaged 30.53 after 26 tests with ZERO centuries. And look what became of him (in the next two tests he scored 2 100s and never looked back). The selectors at the time saw something special in him and kept going with him.

Phil Hughes has that something special too.

Marcus North, batting at his absolute best, was a 35 at test level. Phil Hughes, has the potential to be a 50+ avg batsman over the longrun.
Steve Waugh never looked back after those two hundreds huh??? He struggled after that breakthrough Ashes series and was dropped for his brother 18 months later. You have no idea what you are talking about. He was out of the team for nearly two years and in that time he went back and with the help of Bob Simpson totally revamped his game. This is what Hughes needs as well IMO because teams have worked him out. Unless you researched it on Statsguru or read it on Wickipedia you have nothing.

Does anyone else get the feeling Hughes might be another Blewett at test level? Lots of potential but just never converted after an amazing start to his career. Blewett was pigeon holed as unable to play spin I think it was much like Hughes snd the short ball and eventually if you don't your chance someone else will.

Hughes isn't out of form, yet, and he doesn't have to score off the short ball either. Tugger at his best ducked or whipped them off the hip all day but mentally he was like AB and loved it. Hughes gets himself out too much atm

Lol it is without doubt some of the most embarrassing stuff ever in the cricket forum.

Hughes averages 74 at Bellerive at first class level. I guarantee he will get more than that in his 1st innings.
