On a positive, Smith was a standout and Herman has been great for the last 2 weeks that I saw and appears to be the most skilled of the forwards in attack. Also Simpson is very elusive in attack and constantly beats the first tackle.

Ethan Cook is the one bloke who can hold his head high most weeks.

He has plenty of ability. He should develop into a first grader by the age of 19 easily - if not earlier.

He is physically advanced for his age, and he has ball playing skills for a forward which remind me of a young Greg Bird actually.

Agree entirely.

I've been super impressed with young Redman too. He didn't look much at school (where we had him running around in the centres for some god unknown reason) but I've never seen a bloke who loves tackling so much at 17 years old.

I would have thought Alomai would wake up to himself and raise his commitment.

Maybe we should be wasting less time on some of our lazy islander forwards playing football at this level just because of their superior physical development ( Alomai ) and start getting guys like Ethan Cook into the first grade squad next offseason.

Defence.

Simpson - He is knee high to a grasshopper and skinny. He has a go, but big guys run over him.
Fairweather - not a keen defender at all. Makes tackles, but doesn't go looking for them.
Herman - he has been in the forwards for us, but i think he has played centre before by the look of him - not all forwards can defend in the backs, but he went OK.
Tua - This kid is new from NZ and has a lot of errors in him still, but looks an amazing athlete and seems a fast learner. I think he will be our biggest improver this year, but for now he lets a few past him.
Smith - He spent a fair bit of the game out of position pretending to be a fullback still, but had a few great reads in defence that saved tries as well.
Roberts - average defender who doesn't look for work
Davis - likes to tackle, but not great at it.
Wilson - I shouldn't comment on him, but i will, tends to be soft in defence exactly when you don't want him to be, like on the line.
Redman - little bloke with a heart like phar lap - we shouldn't be using him up - he should be on a slow track to firstgrade, not a fast track to John Hunter.
Mason - Young and growing into a fine prospect with a big growth spurt since last year. Will improve, but not really used to being as big as he is yet.
Tetevano - He has gone back to his old ways of avoiding work in defence. He is a good defender, but has never liked doing it much.
Means - skinny kid with a big heart. As he fills out he will get better and better.
Cook - all the skills and a big motor. defends really well.

Sullivan - he was a good defender in Mathews, but dropping him into NYC last year with very little Ball time was a bad plan. He is bigger and stronger now, but still tackle shy because he was bashed around last year.
Cordner - Heart of a lion. He loves defence. He would throw the opposition the ball so he could tackle them if the coach let him. The harder it gets the more he likes it.
Ailoami - Drops guys who run his way. Not many do, and he doesn't go looking.
Brendan Simpson - not sure.

I think every team in NYC has guys who are great defenders and guys who are terrible defenders, and a few who are terrible but can learn.
Tetevano is a great example - he was missing in action in defence for the first year he was here, and if he can finally be a reliable 20 or 30 tackle a game man by the end of this season he will be a good chance to play firstgrade next year - he has everything else.

NYC: Cronulla Sharks Vs Newcastle Knights
5.15pm Saturday 24 April 2010
Toyota Stadium
1. Neenan Simpson
2. Aaron Fairweather
3. Matt Herman
4. Mitch Williams
5. Justin Smith
6. Tyrone Roberts
7. Adrian Davis
8. Jake Finn
9. Chad Redman
10. Cruise Wilson
11. Zane Tetevano
12. Josh Ailaomai
13. Ethan Cook (c)
Interchange
14. Dane Cordner
15. Brendon Simpson
16. Carl Means
17. Will Smith
18. Rodney Mason
Coach: Garth Brennan

The only player promoted from SG Ball is the ball hog Will Smith, and they sent Tyler Sullivan back to NSW cup, although playing Tyler at halfback is a good thing.
Herman looks like he might be a very good back, and they kept Justin Smith, so that's all good.
Not a single backup hooker and little Chad Redman starting looks dangerous.
I'd love to see Chris Knight from Ball get a run. Although he makes Neenan look big, he is the most dangerous player out of dummy half i've seen come through our juniors. Love to see him scooting past the big guys in NYC. Some of those 130kg blobs in NYC would be lucky to even see Knight as he whizzed past.

Herman has really impressed me. He may have played previously as a centre but I don't think he has pace of a centre. He has the skills of potential great left edge backrower.

It would be nice if he could make firstgrade and wear his dad's number, but 5 is probably out of the question.

Boys are up 6 - 4 after 25 minutes. Try scored by Fairweather.

Albert Kelly scored the first of the day for the Sharks.

So based on this assumption how do you work it out that its 80% islander..Geez are yous kidding me?? And they got offered contracts..so they have as much right to play as anyone else..geez..i know the forwards have been bit on the slack side but the backs have some brilliant skill..but in my opinion.still dont know how to play as a whole team..too busy trying to be showy and wanna just be heroes and get trys on their own......come on guys..stick to the basics and pass the ball out to the forwards and let them do their job too.....if you play as a team..youll be surprised where it gets ya..its takes more than 3 or 4 of ya to win a game......

Oh and as for Zane Tetevano..he is half maori and half cook island...And Joshy is a samoan.....by the way.....is it a racial thing..ive never looked at players race..just at them as individuals..does it make a difference how they play or something????? so if your english you play different than if your an aussie or islander..or what????? Come on people..makes no difference..

Yeah mate doesn't make a rats arse of difference to me...maybe it can get a little mixed up in the 'imports vs locals' thing, but no doubt in years to come we will (and already are) having lots of locals pouring through to the side.
