WARRIORS

Off contract 2024:
Shaun Johnson, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Luke Metcalf, Tohu Harris, Jazz Tevaga, Demitric Sifakula (CO 2025), Freddy Lussick, Jackson Ford, Valingi Kepu

Must keep: Shaun Johnson, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Luke Metcalf

Analysis: Shaun Johnson is in career-best form at the ripe old age of 33 and the halfback was only denied this year’s Dally M Medal by one vote.

Sea Eagles No. 7 Daly Cherry-Evans is proof that halves can stay on the top of their game into their mid 30s and Johnson will be worth a 12-month extension.

Dally M Team of the Year star Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is one of the highest-paid wingers in the NRL but after scoring 24 tries in 20 games this year he proved he’s worth every penny.

Luke Metcalf is one of the fastest halves in the NRL and the 23-year-old has the potential for a huge future, while 31-year-old skipper Togu Harris is ageing like a fine win.

I suspect SJ comes down to whether he wants to play on after this year- I think he was planning to retire at the end of 2023 but reassessed things because he had a great season and was enjoying footy. If he’s going well midway into the season I expect he’ll extend again. If he’s happy on a year by year basis that’s good for the club.

We've always granted the compassionate grounds requests in the past, but in this case f**k no. Management needs to hold firm on his contract and work it out. Cannot lose AFB for next year unless we have another first-tier prop to replace. We are already way understocked on front rowers. This is potentially disastrous news.
