No Robert McCelland took him off back in 2007. Can't victimise these poor asylum seekers.

Brandis and co are just faced to deal with Rudd/Gillards failed legacy.

You are a f**kwit Lens. George Brandis has always said he had everything under control. He even had has metadata thingy to get him.

Morriscum should of got one of his token 5 star Generals to make an announcement.

The Adults are in charge remember.

They have been in charge for what 15 months.

This is a reason why I don't support the detention of asylum seekers. it harms them psychologically , especially the children. By the time they are deemed fair dinkum refugees , they are already damaged goods wandering around the community without monitoring or support.

Thought this needed a bump.

Watched the recount of the story by the surviving hostages last night on 70 minutes.

My God they went through a harrowing experience that they may never get over, particularly the shooting of the cafe manager Tori Johnson in the back of the head in front of a few of them.

Brave buggers if I've ever seen any. Strange how your life can turn upside down so fast. Thoughts are with these poor people.

I've always wondered what the police response would have been had Mr Scipionne's wife and daughter been part of the siege? Im only an armchair expert here but I'm sure things would have been done differently

How about the comments from one of them last night- she blamed the coppers for her being shot in the leg.

She reckons she was "treated like a criminal," and that "they should have sent the army in."

I was in shock. I couldnt believe that she was so f**king ungrateful to the people who saved her life.

The AFP were drilled in the same sort of thing weeks before the attack. They are experts in this... We are not.

Thought I needed to comment on this one, the reason he was not taken out early was the possible bad PR that might have risen for the premier and the commish whatever the end result.

The police commissioner could have given the direction for 2 of his highly trained snipers to go for simultaneous head and body shots. Watching the vision on the day and last night there was plenty of opportunities without endangering the hostages. I reckon I could have got a decent shot off.

It was the fear of bad publicity, the hope it would end peacefully (never a hope) and the indecisiveness of a commissioner and a premier.

Only one person needed to die (or be taken down) that day, not 3.

Sorry if I have upset anyone but this is what I believe.

Have a look at other hostage situations around the world. Unfortunately most end up with hostage casualties. The media just need to create some more controversy and someone must be to blame for it....apart from the lunatic of course.

That combined with the fact they had to treat seriously the threat that he had explosives strapped to his body.

She revealed her level of stupidity when she thought that it was appropriate for a terrorist making demands to speak to the prime minister as acceptable.

Yep let's just encourage more of this shit to happen.

The glass isn't bullet proof. It's bullet resistant. So the bullet can go through but the shards of glass would go at such a degree of size, speed and direction that it could be just as lethal to the persons inside then a single shot at the target.

In terms of a previous post regarding the bad pr well that's one way of looking at it.. But the wait it out, constant communication, continually working on plans to minimise any injuries or fatalities is a tested and proven strategy... But I guess that is what separates Australia from many other countries around the world when it comes to hostage situations.

Well I do agree with your last point- but this woman in particular is the most ungrateful piece of shit I have ever seen. Whether it should of have been the police or army that were sent in, her life was spared at the expense of injuries to her legs. For her to carry on like this is not only un-Australian, it's just not something that any decent human being would do.

Except he had told everyone he had a bomb and had a backpack which no one knew what was inside.
They were never going to take lethal action while the anticipated explosion was in a confined space - it would've killed everyone.

Agree with this. The woman is a moron.

This is such an infuriating topic when people who clearly don't look at the FACTS, make these insane comments "that they believe"!

There are a handful of facts that have come out, cold hard facts!

1. The AFP did not know whether he had a bomb attached to him or not, he was wearing a backpack the whole time. If he did & especially if he had a dead man switch, things end badly.

2. The glass was bullet resistant, as all windows in martin place are! What does this mean? It means that a bullet will not go through the window at first go unless they had explosive, armour piercing shells & even then the accuracy drops significantly which means there's still a fair bit of a chance that he could of missed. If they took a shot and missed, he probably would of slauted them all or let off "the bomb" they they didn't know if he had.

3. The inside of the store is made of marble, most bullets ricochet off marble. I hopefully don't have to explain why that's another reason why they didn't shoot. It's how Katrina Dawson died.

4. As someone else said, their mandate is to always try and end things peacefully, until the 2.00am mark, he hadn't hurt anyone, even when most had escaped. Things obviously changed at that point.

5. He requested an ISIS flag, a conversation with Abbott & a helicopter to land in martin place and take him away, we under no circumstances negotiate with Terrorists. Simple.

We were dealing with a murderous criminal with history of Violent crime, fraud, Postal harassment, sexual assaults & accessory to murder.

Combine that with requesting and ISIS flag and saying he has a bomb strapped to him, they did everything that they could causing as minimal collateral damage as possible

There is no substance to shit like bad Pr, or "they should have taken the shot". They always have a mandate and a protocol, and I believe they followed it correctly and got as good of a result as they possibly could.

Experience tells me Az, that you are 100% correct.

It's very easy for armchair experts, (and there have been plenty) to 'advise' what should and what shouldn't have been done. Specialist Police Squads train for this type of situation and entries. And, the female hostage does come across as ungrateful however might I suggest that she would still be suffering (and possibly will do for some time) from PTSD. No-one can be trained towitness death and not be affected in some way, let alone a member of the public thrown in at the deep end so to speak.

There is one person and one person only to blame for this incident - Man Haron Monis - no-one else.
