I feel sorry for Brian McDermott who will take over within a couple of months and he has to work with what AOB created here and it's going to be a shit start to his NRL head coaching career because he hasn't had the chance to stamp his style on us in an off-season. Be interesting to see if we give him the reigns heading into next season too.

He seems to happy as assistant and waiting his chance. He is only 52 so he has time on his side. He might interim but taking over the club may be a little early. He seems intent on making the right call for a career over here. That is why I like him. Despite his obvious credentials he knows it is a different level here.

They’re both decent enough players when picked in the right position. Unfortunately Obi (even though he’s single handedly won 4 comps) can’t grasp this fact.

They have to pull the plug early or else we’ll have another off season where we’re trying to solve problems quickly rather than making an actual plan and giving ourselves time to execute.

At some point the players need to take some responsibility for not having a go when the game gets tough. We’ve had the nice guy coach that didn’t work. We have the tough coach that apparently isn’t working. Perhaps it isn’t the coach and it’s the culture ingrained in the club that nobody seems to be able to change?

There’s definitely truth to that but at the same time I don’t think our roster has improved under AOB in both in recruitment and development.

I also don’t think our play style is great.

We can make all sorts of excuses but AOB has had his chance here. If this season goes bad he will be the one to fall.

No one survives 4 consecutive years of decline. Parr will have his chance to get his man as well.

Hopefully all the the above doesn’t happen, because it means we’re probably playing finals footy.

"Made the finals". There's the biggest asterisk on both of those that you'd ever find. We were slightly less shit than a handful of other teams in both cases, and our chances of doing anything was practically zero. We need to be better than just "scraped into the finals on the back of about 5 losses in a row".

Finals should not even be on the agenda this year. If it happens then that is great. I just want us to drag these games into the deep end and see who is the strongest swimmer.

I hope AOB is at the club next year, because ultimately that will mean that he has succeeded this year and we’re heading in the right direction. He has Parr, McDermott, the CoE- all the extra pieces that were missing to hopefully bring the club up to speed with where they need to be. If he’s gone, it’s just another couple of years we need to waste.

However, the two things that concern me are:

1) we’re losing players to other clubs because they can’t see themselves developing under his coaching (Dom, Watson etc).

2) every other club can rebuild and develop a roster in the space of 12 months, but we never seem capable of achieving that. I’m still waiting for our much improved defence that we were promised back in 2020.
