Blair was definitely an improvement. Our problem is that he should be the smallest of our backrowers, not the biggest

Tim Simona is only 4-5 kilos lighter than both Anasta and Fulton.

In a way its good that a performance like this comes out in R1. Get it out of the way early, and give Potter and the team a chance to improve.

It was always going to take time for this inherited team to gel under Potter. I get a feeling they will come good towards the back end of the year

Some Telling stats from Last night

Wests Tigers - 10 Tackle breaks
Akuila Uate - 11 Tackle breaks

Lawrence and Blair - 6 missed tackles each
Newcastle - 9 missed tackles

Anasta Fulton and Blair combined- 9 hit ups for 55 metres
Jeremy Smith 10 hit ups for 76 metres

We got monstered up front and schooled in the backs.

Only players who can be omitted from any criticisms are Farah, Galloway, Buchanan and Woods. Fulton gets an honourable mention, but his effectiveness in tackles has dropped off immensely, he's just not sticking at the initial contact.

Is it lack of effort or are we just deadset not good enough ?

Under size, under strength. You blokes are going to get bullied by every club in the comp. If it wasnt for farah that could of been 70.

Backrow = too small
centres = too small
wingers = too small
fullback = too slow

Newcastle have improved leaps and bounds that is for sure, but id expect every other side in the comp to offer that sort of power and speed this season. Your former coach has really left a mess.

Some good, Buchannan despite being out of his depth and debuting against blokes like Jeremy Smith and co, I thought he was excellent. Woods will come good. Farah and Benji. Get a fullback and some size in the backs and backrow and you blokes will be right back in it.
Our backrow needs Thompson and Pettybourne in,and Fulton and Anasta out.
Our centres are not small,I don't know what you are on about,around 100kg each,they are out of form,not small.
Our wingers,we have a midget who is past it,and Koro who is green not small,95kg.
And fullback,Moltzen is crap,the one thing he is not is slow,he is a pea heart who will not run the ball back,so your overall summary whilst nailing the problem areas is wrong on almost every point

from what I saw, both.

Credit to Newcastle too, they took full advantage of the opportunities presented and their good defence forced a lot of our mistakes because as we've always done when trailing, we panic.

I personally don't think we have bought any where near as well as other teams in recent years (without stating the obvious and the cost of Blair). We have gone backwards I feel.

We need to purchase some aggressive forwards that will provide support to Woods and Galloway. Newcastle did and look what they did to us last night. Souths are another good example, they bought Burgess and in that package deal pick up his three brothers, any one of which I'd welcome to our pack.

Money needs to be spent and I hate to say it but there are players in our team getting too much for little or no return. Farah needs to be kept and I hate to say it but Benji needs to be looked at closely. His figures often look good at the end of the season I know, but I never seem to see them in a game....

A month or so of what we just witnessed and our season is all but over (as was the case in 2012 with a 1 and 6 record). If these current players do not measure up blood the young ones or spend some money on some aggression....

cut Tuiqiri, Utai, Reddy and Moltzen and buy two big back rowers. They don't need to be rep players, just hard working, hard running toilers.

Brenton Lawrence went as the bargain of the year to Manly. Sheens didn't even consider him.

I am interested to see 2014 with a little Potter stamp on it

We have to beef up our pack, the back row as mentioned is too light on,we cant afford to have that combo again or we will continue to get steam rolled.As for the backs Teddy,Simona and Nofaoluma in asap.

I would like to see Simona get a go too. He runs hard and has heart, something we lacked last night.

We got beaten badly last night because we put a ute up against a tank, its that simple.We made a massive amount of errors that were a direct result of being monster-ed in attack and defense. As the game went on the more our structures collapsed.

We were getting murdered out wide because we had to compress our defense so much to protect the middle against their charging bulls, we gave them numbers out wide. Iam not prepared to bag any one player, as far as Iam concerned no one really dogged it, I just think they were put under enormous pressure as they did not have the fire power to compete and that has been the same problem for a very long time.

My only changes for the Penrith game, Teddy to the wing in place of Utai and they
both inter change from time to time and Anasta to the bench as our n014

Good point, last year we beat the Sharks in round 1 and did not play any better than last night. Iam with you its going to take time and personnel changes to make a difference. As long as we dont suffer any major injuries I think you will see a better side in a couple of months. It was always going to take time to de Sheens the place

I disagree with almost all comments about needing big back rowers. Whilst it may help make the Tigers less of a mockery the size of back rowers had nothing to do with what happened last night and should the ruck speed remain as is it may soon even things out for us when we find some rhythm.

What happened last night was a piss weak and Heartless effort. All the size in the world cant make up for having no pride.

I'd almost contemplate starting with a big pack and put backrowers on the bench when the ruck speeds up later in the game.

8 - Woods
9 - Farah
10 - Galloway
11 - Murdoch Masila
12 - Buchanan
13 - Blair

14 - Fulton
15 - Anasta
16 - Pettybourne
17 - Thompson

After 20 mins, rest BMM and Buchanan and bring them back for 10-15 mins of the second half in place of Woods and Galloway

replace them with Anasta and Fulton in the first half, and during the second half rotate the forwards with Pettybourne and Thompson, who could play close to 30 mins in the back end of the game and ensure that none of our pack are dead on their feet like last night either.

It could help us cover the start of games where we get smashed and help sure up our defensive structure. Once the game starts speeding up after 20 mins or so, bring on the quicker back rowers to run at tiring big boys on the opposition.

Just an idea.

We need to also fight for ruck speed , we usually just submit and lay lifeless on the ground. We will never earn a penalty or momentum doing this.

Need a kicking game.
We had a tail wind in the first half and should be pinning teams deep but came up with nothing.

This is hurting us a lot. We don't chase either. Shit.
