Souths have been fined $20k by the NRL for failing to be aware of Burgess' 'satisfaction' payment made to the security guard.

The media were completely feral at the presser with Suzanne Young.

Yeah the media - particularly Massoud - were very aggressive/sensationalist in their questioning. Not surprising. This whole thing:

Why do the NRL integrity unit even bother existing? Their rulings are quite clearly pulled out of their arse at all times and heavily biased based on what club the offending player is a member of.

media are grubs and will whinge about this for the next week

So they should.

On what basis is a player getting ejected from a club for drunkeness, fighting a bouncer, spending a night in gaol, then only having charges dropped after paying the victim off considered less of an offence than a player trying to tap a chick walking passed him in a bar?

No consistency whatsoever.

Bashing a security guard, spitting at someone, getting arrested then paying to cover it up and lying about it all = $20k fine

Dropping the C Bomb on twitter = $50k fine

Makes total sense..

Because South Sydney is the Pride of the League. The NRL wants us to win the competition. When South Sydney is doing well Rugby League is doing well. Shane Richardson is a crony of the NRL. Amirite?

They weren't even fined for the incident itself.
The club was fined for f**king up the investigation.
So the players pretty much got off with a couple of bad headlines written about them.

The $20k NRL fine is against the club, not the players. Without knowing how much Souths fined the players it's hard to measure it against any other incident.

The NRL have obviously deemed souths sanctioning of the players as appropriate.

No incident is ever going to be the same so grasping for consistency around sanctions is pointless.

Firstly, The 50k fine for the c bomb is completely irrelevant to his. They got that wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Secondly, "paying to cover it up" is irrelevant because it is a completely valid and legal option in the jurisdiction where it happened. You cannot punish someone for exercising their legal rights.

Thirdly, in the end it was a bar scuffle. The alleged victim didn't want to take it further. There was an article a while back where the Arizona police were bemused that they were getting so many media inquiries for such a minor issue. The only reason it is a story is because of they hyperventilation and overreaction from scumbags in the media selling papers by making mountains out of molehills.

South Sydney fined for Arizona incident

Mon 02 Mar, 2015, 1:50pm
NRL

The NRL said today it has fined the South Sydney club $20,000 following its investigation into an incident in Arizona.

Chief Operating Officer Suzanne Young said the Rabbitohs club had met its obligations in advising the Integrity Unit about the incident involving Luke Burgess and John Sutton late last year.

However, the club had failed to follow the matter to its conclusion, which would have enabled it to notify the Unit that the charges against Burgess had been withdrawn after an agreement to pay compensation to the security guard involved in the incident.

The prospect of such an arrangement was raised shortly after the incident occurred and should have been disclosed to the NRL.

As a result, the Rabbitohs have been fined $20,000.

Ms Young said both Burgess and Sutton had already been disciplined by the Rabbitohs and no further action would be taken against them.

Ms Young said evidence to the investigation did not prove that any South Sydney official, including then CEO Shane Richardson, knew that a payment had been paid to the security guard involved in the incident.

However, the club should have been more diligent in ascertaining whether a payment requested by the security officer had been made by Burgess who was an employee of the club.

It should be noted that a “compromise agreement” is a legally acceptable way of dealing with offences of this nature in the State of Arizona.

“I should stress that the Integrity Unit relies on the clubs to provide reliable and accurate information about any incidents involving their players,” Ms Young said.

“If clubs withhold information or fail to disclose the full details they face sanctions – as we have seen in this case.”

Ms Young acknowledged that the initial investigation could have been handled better by the Integrity Unit.

She said new systems and processes would be put in place to help clubs fulfil their obligations for incidents – and improve the Integrity Unit’s processes to deal with such issues in the future.

Consistent with NRL processes, South Sydney now has the opportunity to make a submission regarding the preliminary finding.
