Im scared he has a 'conditional' release and nobody will sign him and we will be stuck with him. Will sleep better when someone is silly enough to sign him. Wish he was just given a full release. Who gives a f**k if he plays for another team against us.
He does have a conditional release.

The club has released him from his contract at seasons end, the condition is that he can't play for another NRL side until his contract date has expired (which I think was 2015)

If he had any class 'based on his on field performances' he would:

* show some class and offer to stand himself down and let the next generation have a go,
(OK realise we most likely can't give the next generation a go based on the cap)

* show some class and offer to play 7 and let Sironen take over the running of the backs,

AND/OR
* show some class and put put your body on the line for the rest of the year,
* show some class and look interested, after all, you a contracted player,

He is doing all of those things. I suggest you watch a game or two and that will cover off points 2,3 & 4. If you thought about it prior to posting this you would also realize he has stepped down and is moving on at the end of this year so that covers your first point.

Benji has always been a classy person. He has tried his guts out for us. Go watch the game against Manly the other night - he really put in and did some good things. He is at this point past it a little but he was no worse than Farah out there and was considerably better than Anasta.

Please state some of the good things he displayed in the Manly game.
I'm intrigued because nothing stood out to me.

His kick for Nofo wasn't great although Nofo made it look good.
Kicks for touch barely make 10 metres.
His passing was... Well you know. Shit.
Defence is and always will be.. well you know. Shit.
His chase on Lyon makes me sick just thinking about it.
And the one thing that once made him great, his step and running game is now dead.

Running game was the only redeeming quality that made us forget the schoolboy mistakes and brain explosions.

You guys are smoking some stuff. He was solid all over the park. There were no brain explosions. He stuffed up one sure try simply because he can't run it anymore. His passing definitely wasn't shit. He put in plenty of solid kicks. The kick to Nofo was good.

I mean calling the chase on Lyon poor shows how delusional you are - he busted his gut on that play. Yes he stuffed it but where were the rest of the team.

I agree that his running game has deserted him but he is putting in and he hasn't been anywhere near as bad as what is being stated. Its just a bunch of morons hacking him when he is at the end of his career and isn't the player he used to be.

I'm with you Matchball, we must have been watching the same Tigers v Manly game.

Tiger05, I notice in a number of your posts regarding Marshall, you mention Farah and state gems like,

at 9:21 this morning:
he was no worse than Farah out there
20th July - Post 202:
As for Benji he was poor but so were Farah and Woods.
7th July - Post 103:
Robbie takes just as many poor options as Benji.
on Benji Rumour thread,
4th July - Post 102:
Yes Benji makes mistakes however if you watched that game you would also see Robbie coming up with some shockers. Benji came up with less poor plays than Robbie.
4th July - Post 111:
I'm not knocking Robbie and I thought he went great but he made more poor plays than Benji did.

Just glad that we will have Robbie Farah for the rest of his career.

This whole situation with Benji has me a bit perplexed. In some ways I have a degree of pity for him (hear me out guys).

In the last 18 months he has; lost the captancy of his country, probably lost his place in his national team, lost selection into the NRL All Stars game, cost himself at least 700K per year with us and had his reputation go from hero to zero.

How this has happened is no one elses fault but his. I am not saying it has anything to do with his private life but marriage hasn't helped him it would seem, or it doesn't agree with his footy. The guy has gone from a club legend to nearly a pariah. I just have a level of pity for him...

Having said that though many players have been in similar situations and have lifted themself from the mire, it seems Benji just doesn't want to. Whoever takes him on would want to have one very good motivator on the books.

For some reason when Farah does a crud play its all okay but when Benji does it is the end of the world.

I love Robbie and think he is a great player and I think he is the best player to use to show you how dumb some of you sound.

I'm totally with you on that. It's really sad the way it's all unfolded.

Am I happy he is going...Yes, it is undoubtedly the best thing for the club. But I still really feel for him. No matter what some of you guys think of him now, he didn't deserve to go out like this. Even if you think it's all his own fault, it's still pretty bloody tragic.

I'll always have loyalty and respect for Benji and I hope he goes and kills it wherever he ends up.

Marshall checking out lie of the land at possible new home in Auckland

Glenn Jackson, Adrian Proszenko
Published: August 2, 2013 - 3:00AM

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall is making a flying visit to Auckland to view Super Rugby outfit the Blues' training facilities and meet with club powerbrokers.
Having been given permission by the Tigers, Marshall left Sydney on Thursday night, and will return on Friday evening, as the five-eighth - who has gained a release from the final two years of his NRL contract - edges towards a decision.
Marshall is weighing up between Super Rugby clubs the Blues, NSW and Melbourne Rebels. The Rebels seem to be outsiders, while the fact Marshall has travelled to Auckland might be seen as a sign the Blues are favourites, with the 28-year-old seemingly unable to rely on an ARU top-up to sign with an Australian franchise.
Marshall will meet coach John Kirwan, chief executive Andy Dalton and stakeholder Murray Bolton on Friday. Along with his manager Martin Tauber, Marshall will also hold meetings with prospective as well as incumbent sponsors.
''We're going to sit down and talk with them [the Blues], as well as have a look at all the facilities,'' Tauber said. ''But we won't be making any decision on the spot.''
Marshall is due to return on Friday night, will train on Saturday, before travelling to the Gold Coast with the rest of his Tigers squad before Sunday's clash with the Titans. ''They've been great about all this,'' Tauber said of the Tigers. ''He'll be back [on Friday] night, and back at training on Saturday morning.''
While Marshall had originally planned to fly from Auckland direct to the Gold Coast, Tigers officials acceded to his request to travel as long as he returned to Sydney on Friday night. ''[Friday] is a day off,'' chief executive Grant Mayer said.
''His manager was very open with us. He asked if Benji could go to a meeting, and whilst his initial request was difficult to agree to, we found a resolution and Benji will be back at training on Saturday morning for the captain's run.''
Marshall, who stunned the Tigers with his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, is most likely to sign with a Super Rugby outfit, with the prospect of playing in Japanese rugby at the end of 2014. The Kiwi, though, has had interest from French rugby.
Marshall said on Thursday he had yet to set a time frame for his decision. ''To be honest, I've just been focusing on trying to get my confidence right on the field, which is the hardest part,'' he said.
''Once I get that right and feeling like I'm playing well it will help me focus more on trying to make a decision. If a decision comes my way, then it comes my way. If it doesn't, there's no rush. It's nice to have options but I've got six weeks of the season to finish here. That's my priority at the moment. It's not about finding a contract, that happens within the midst of playing.''
Marshall reiterated he would not pull on an Australian jumper in rugby, which would effectively end any prospect of an ARU top-up.
''I've done that before at schoolboy level. It didn't feel right having the haka done to me and I stand by that,'' he said. ''I grew up in New Zealand, I'm a proud Kiwi and playing Australian Schoolboys in rugby league, it was a tough decision.''

Ron's_Mate, here is the other papers take on the trip to NZ.

BALI one week, Auckland the next. Now for the Gold Coast.

Frequent-flyer Benji Marshall flew out of Sydney yesterday on a reconnaissance mission ahead of his expected switch to the Super Rugby franchise Auckland Blues.

Marshall's wife Zoe has also travelled to New Zealand.

Auckland are firm favourites to sign Marshall with a possible stint in Japanese rugby to bolster his income.

Wests Tigers approved Marshall's mid-week trip to Auckland - despite the club playing Gold Coast at Skilled Park on Sunday.

He is expected back tonight before flying to Coolangatta for the Titans match.
Marshall travelled to Bali early last month for a week-long mid-season holiday with Zoe. It was during his Bali journey he decided to quit Wests Tigers for rugby union.

Before departing Sydney, Marshall said he was no closer to making a final decision.

"Finishing the season is my priority at the moment. It's not about finding a contract. If that happens in the midst of playing then it happens. Until that happens, there's no point talking about ifs and buts. I don't have any regrets."

Then he talks about Sheens, Potter, refocus - the highlighted pieces below are by me and have me perplexed and I have gone, in regards to him leaving, good, I feel sorry for him, he should sack his manager, just go and now is he bitter? is he telling porky's?

Marshall also said he never wanted Tim Sheens sacked as Wests Tigers coach, adding it would be "sad" if Mick Potter was next coach dumped.

Asked did the club make an error axing Sheens, Marshall said: "I didn't want to see Tim to go in the first place.

"At the end of the day it was hard to accept that. (But) when a new coach comes in you have to do your best to try and help him.

"That is what I have tried to do this year and, as much as it hurt being put on bench by him (Potter), it helped me turn around, refocus and try and be better for the team.

"It's hard coming in as new coach. If you don't have success it is such a fickle world.

"At the end of the day if he (Potter) loses his job, that's sad because as players we have probably let him down."

A fallout with Potter has been identified as reason Marshall has decided to leave Wests Tigers. Drama between the pair started when Potter benched Marshall mid-season.

Asked should there be pressure on Potter, Marshall said: "I wouldn't know - I won't be here. There is always speculation around clubs that don't do well. (But) if anyone is asking about my relationship with Mick, it's fine. We get along great.

"We have been chatting a bit about what I am going to do and where he thinks I should be with my footy. There is no dramas with our relationship.

"It's speculation. I don't know what is going on. Mick doesn't know what's going on.

"That's between the board and the club."

Marshall also stressed Sheens shouldn't be criticised for continuing to accept pay-out money each month from Wests Tigers.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday revealed the club was paying Sheens $8650 a week for doing nothing.

"That's not his fault," he said. "That's how the world works. If you are entitled to money and you are on a contract you should get it."

Despite his urge to play rugby union, Marshall still harbours a desire to represent New Zealand in the rugby league World Cup.

Asked if he wanted to play for the Kiwis again, Marshall said: "Absolutely. I'm a proud Kiwi. I won the last World Cup and would love to win another before I finish.

"I'm probably not playing well enough to deserve that at the moment (but) if I can find form in the next six weeks ... and if the rules permit then hopefully I am allowed."

Dump him now. He has had his time to meet clubs or his manager iron stuff out.
His future is taking priority now over the season. Even though our season is dead he is jet setting around.

Marshall is the poor bastard caught in between a shithouse manager whose hardball tactics with Wests Tigers have left his star client unemployed and tainted.

Benji was on a good thing getting a contract upgrade despite not deserving it.

Benji's manager has screwed Benji over massively.

Yep MU that pretty much covers how most of us feel about this messy break up with Benji and the WT.
It's sad in a way that it has come to this,on one hand we remember the brillance before it dimmed to magnify his errant ways, especially later in his playing career.
Instead, unfortunately others will also remember him for the drama involving his departure to union, which has portrayed him in a unflattering light, that can only be fault of himself and manager.

Benji, again talking up his desire to play for the All Blacks in todays paper, dont get me wrong,i wish him well and hope it works out for him in union, but in reallity the All Blacks dont need him as a player, they are already the best side in the world, due not only to talent and skill, but also structure and discipline, something Benji struggles to conform with regularly.
