Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall is making a flying visit to Auckland to view Super Rugby outfit the Blues' training facilities and meet with club powerbrokers.
Having been given permission by the Tigers, Marshall left Sydney on Thursday night, and will return on Friday evening, as the five-eighth - who has gained a release from the final two years of his NRL contract - edges towards a decision.
Marshall is weighing up between Super Rugby clubs the Blues, NSW and Melbourne Rebels. The Rebels seem to be outsiders, while the fact Marshall has travelled to Auckland might be seen as a sign the Blues are favourites, with the 28-year-old seemingly unable to rely on an ARU top-up to sign with an Australian franchise.
Marshall will meet coach John Kirwan, chief executive Andy Dalton and stakeholder Murray Bolton on Friday. Along with his manager Martin Tauber, Marshall will also hold meetings with prospective as well as incumbent sponsors.
''We're going to sit down and talk with them [the Blues], as well as have a look at all the facilities,'' Tauber said. ''But we won't be making any decision on the spot.''
Marshall is due to return on Friday night, will train on Saturday, before travelling to the Gold Coast with the rest of his Tigers squad before Sunday's clash with the Titans. ''They've been great about all this,'' Tauber said of the Tigers. ''He'll be back [on Friday] night, and back at training on Saturday morning.''
While Marshall had originally planned to fly from Auckland direct to the Gold Coast, Tigers officials acceded to his request to travel as long as he returned to Sydney on Friday night. ''[Friday] is a day off,'' chief executive Grant Mayer said.
''His manager was very open with us. He asked if Benji could go to a meeting, and whilst his initial request was difficult to agree to, we found a resolution and Benji will be back at training on Saturday morning for the captain's run.''
Marshall, who stunned the Tigers with his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, is most likely to sign with a Super Rugby outfit, with the prospect of playing in Japanese rugby at the end of 2014. The Kiwi, though, has had interest from French rugby.
Marshall said on Thursday he had yet to set a time frame for his decision. ''To be honest, I've just been focusing on trying to get my confidence right on the field, which is the hardest part,'' he said.
''Once I get that right and feeling like I'm playing well it will help me focus more on trying to make a decision. If a decision comes my way, then it comes my way. If it doesn't, there's no rush. It's nice to have options but I've got six weeks of the season to finish here. That's my priority at the moment. It's not about finding a contract, that happens within the midst of playing.''
Marshall reiterated he would not pull on an Australian jumper in rugby, which would effectively end any prospect of an ARU top-up.
''I've done that before at schoolboy level. It didn't feel right having the haka done to me and I stand by that,'' he said. ''I grew up in New Zealand, I'm a proud Kiwi and playing Australian Schoolboys in rugby league, it was a tough decision.''
